James Gunn recently talked about Batman’s future in the DC Universe, indicating that significant developments are underway for the character’s next storyline. He also acknowledged the ongoing discussions among fans about Batman’s appearance, specifically the blue-grey suit.
James Gunn on DCU Batman’s story, blue-grey suit and white eyes
James Gunn recently shared news about Batman’s role in the new DC Universe while on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast. He said they’ve developed a strong story for Batman, specifically for the upcoming movie, *The Brave and the Bold*. Gunn also responded to fan questions about whether the DCU version of Batman will have the classic blue-grey suit and white eyes seen in many comic books.
Gunn pointed out that even seemingly minor details about Batman – like his belt, logo, or eye color – can spark passionate arguments among fans. He admitted some of this feels almost like a matter of faith, but stressed that the core of Batman lies in his character and the stories told about him. Gunn believes all different interpretations of Batman, from the dark and serious detective to the powerful brawler and even the more lighthearted versions from older comics, are valuable.
Gunn remembered enjoying the Batman comics from the 1970s by Neal Adams and Denny O’Neil, particularly issue #225, which had a supernatural element and remained his favorite.
Gunn described the film as presenting “Batman in a uniquely supernatural setting,” a departure from previous adaptations. He explained that this period of comics helped him understand Batman could be a much grittier and more adult character than the campy TV show portrayed.
The upcoming film, The Brave and the Bold, will focus on the dynamic between Batman and his son, Robin (Damian Wayne). Director James Gunn has suggested the story might also involve magical aspects connected to Ra’s al-Ghul and the Lazarus Pit. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
James Gunn has confirmed that Batman will continue to be a key character in the overarching story of the DC Universe, linking together films featuring Superman, Peacemaker, and other upcoming projects.
