James Gunn recently clarified rumors regarding Emilia Harcourt possibly becoming Peacewrecker in the Peacemaker series within the DCU. He discussed this during a conversation on The Morning After Pod: Phase Hero’s Peacemaker Podcast.
Could Emilia Harcourt be Peacewrecker in DCU’s Peacemaker?
During a conversation on The Morning After Pod, Brandon Davis questioned James Gunn about the possibility of Jennifer Holland’s character, Harcourt, fully embracing the “Peacewrecker” persona. Gunn replied, “I think it would be extremely difficult to convince Emilia Clarke to wear a costume,” alluding to a previous scene in the season where Harcourt flatly rejected the idea of wearing a suit as being “stupid.”
Gunn clarified that in the DC Universe, heroes require believable reasons for wearing costumes. He used Superman and other iconic characters as examples, noting they all have stories that explain their choices. He then pointed to characters like Judo Master, who still wear costumes seemingly without a reason, suggesting it’s a quirk of personality rather than a defined purpose.
Gunn pointed out, “In Washington, D.C., it feels like people need a specific justification for dressing up,” highlighting that Harcourt’s story arc is different from the typical path of characters who wear costumes.
Harcourt’s journey and emotional development have been key to Season 2 of Peacemaker, especially in the important scene from Episode 6 with John Cena’s character. James Gunn pointed out her insecurity, explaining, “She believes she’s not worthy, and she’s trying to protect John by keeping her distance.” He also emphasized that her storyline is about learning to accept love and recognize her own value. This suggests her character will grow through personal development, rather than by becoming a different persona like Peacewrecker. Her story is focused on self-worth.
In the podcast, Gunn explained that the “Peacewrecker” title was initially presented as a playful idea, not a firm commitment. This approach helped maintain Harcourt’s character consistency, staying true to her existing relationship with Peacemaker and her place within the broader DCU story. He clarified, “Her personality would need to change significantly” for her to genuinely embrace that role.
I’ve been following the buzz about Harcourt potentially becoming Peacewrecker – it’s been talked about on screen and in interviews, which was exciting! But James Gunn actually addressed it directly. He explained that, as of right now, the current plans for the DCU don’t really allow for that transformation to happen. It’s a shame, but it sounds like it’s unlikely for the time being.
