James Gunn Just Name-Dropped Guardians Of The Galaxy When Hyping Up Supergirl

The DC Universe launched successfully in 2025 with Superman, and now Supergirl is set to follow suit in 2026. The first trailer for Supergirl promises a lot of exciting, action-packed scenes in space. Interestingly, the movie also features a rock ‘n’ roll vibe, which James Gunn has compared to his work on Guardians of the Galaxy.

Although James Gunn isn’t directing Supergirl, the movie strongly resembles Guardians of the Galaxy in its style and feel. Both films share a science fiction setting and a lively, rock-and-roll energy, suggesting the characters Kara Zor-El and Star-Lord would likely be friends. Gunn recently discussed this connection during an appearance on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, explaining…

It’s a science fiction adventure, similar to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ and inspired by the Tom King book. While it doesn’t stick to the book exactly, it keeps the main ideas and themes.

I just saw the new Supergirl movie, and while it was initially called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – based on the comic book story of the same name – the title was simplified. I’m guessing that was to avoid confusion with the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow film. But don’t let the shorter title fool you; the movie still draws heavily from that original comic book arc. It centers around a bit of a lost Kara Danvers who ends up helping a young girl seeking revenge for her father’s death – a death caused by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills. It’s a surprisingly emotional story, and the comic book roots really shine through.

As a big movie fan, I find it really intriguing that the Supergirl film isn’t going to be a strict adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow. I know some book fans might not love changes, but honestly, I think it’s a good thing! It means even those of us who have read the comic won’t be able to predict exactly what happens, and sometimes, straying from the original story can actually make a movie even better.

Craig Gillespie, known for films with strong female leads and a rebellious style – like Disney’s Cruella – directs Supergirl. However, it’s hard not to notice similarities to Guardians of the Galaxy. Promotional images even show the main character, played by Milly Alcock, wearing a Walkman that looks just like the one Chris Pratt used in the Marvel films.

I’m really excited about the direction of Supergirl if it takes inspiration from the Guardians movies. I love those films – they’re some of my favorites in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I know Supergirl won’t have the same team dynamic that made the Guardians trilogy so special, but I’m happy to see elements of that style included.

I’m really excited about the upcoming Supergirl movie, which hits theaters on June 26th! While we wait, you can enjoy Superman and other DC Universe films and shows with an HBO Max subscription.
