James Gunn has announced the third animated series planned for the new DC Universe continuity. A key part of Gunn’s vision for DC is to tell stories across many different types of media. He’s emphasized that the DC Universe won’t be limited to just live-action movies and shows, and will also include animation, video games, and other formats.
The initial plan for the DC Universe is starting to become a reality. We’ve already seen movies, shows, and animated projects, and more are on the way. Over the next few months and years, James Gunn will be announcing the next group of projects to expand the DCU.
James Gunn recently announced a new animated series that will be part of the official DC Universe storyline. He celebrated the 55th anniversary of the DC hero Mister Miracle and confirmed that a streaming series starring the character is in development for HBO Max.
The upcoming Mister Miracle TV show was initially a question mark regarding its place in the new DC Universe. However, James Gunn has confirmed it will be part of the DCU, stating the character “soon be seen in our DCU animated show.”
Today marks the 55th anniversary of Mister Miracle’s first appearance! Debuting in ‘MISTER MIRACLE’ #1 in 1971, the character was created by Marv Wolfman and Jack Kirby, with art by Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta. Fans will soon be able to enjoy a new animated adaptation of Mister Miracle, inspired by the acclaimed 12-issue comic series by Tom King and Mitch Gerads.
This is the first sign that the character and show are officially part of the DC Universe, and it brings another well-known DC hero into James Gunn’s developing storyline.
Every Confirmed Animated Show in the DCU Canon
Creature Commandos

The DC Universe’s first fully animated show, Creature Commandos, is set to premiere in December 2024 on HBO Max. It will introduce viewers to Task Force M, a team of supervillains with supernatural abilities managed by the government.
Written by James Gunn himself, Creature Commandos centers on the adventures of its team as they battle Princess Ilana Rostovic, a powerful and ambitious royal who aims to take over the world. A second season is currently being made, but a release date hasn’t been announced.
Blue Beetle

Xolo Maridueña will reprise his role as Blue Beetle, one of the few characters continuing from the old DC Extended Universe into the new DC Universe. He’ll star in his own animated series that’s officially part of the DCU’s story.
Not much is known about the upcoming DCU Blue Beetle series yet, but in an interview with Russ Milheim from TopMob, actor Xolo Maridueña shared that they’re aiming for a 2026 release. The series will likely continue the story of Jaime Reyes, a young man who gains an alien suit of armor called the Scarab.
Mister Miracle

Finally, the DCU is adding the recently confirmed Mister Miracle as part of its animated lineup. This new series will be based on the critically acclaimed 2017 comic book run by Tom King and Mitch Gerads, and will tell the story of the hero as he navigates a massive war across the galaxy.
The story of Mister Miracle takes place in the universe of DC’s New Gods and centers on Scot Free, a super-powered escape artist. He’s drawn back to his home planet when war erupts between it and the world of his wife, Big Barda. This series will also be the first appearance of the famous DC villain Darkseid in a DC Studios production, as he’s a key character in the Mister Miracle comic book storyline.
