James Gunn Confirms That ‘Superman’ Sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Is All About Clark & Lex

After the successful relaunch of the DC Universe and the conclusion of the previous DC Extended Universe, a new movie is planned. While details are still mostly secret, director and writer James Gunn has confirmed it will continue the story in the way fans anticipate.

So far, we’ve only gotten a glimpse of the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie through some artwork. It shows David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor both standing together and fighting. Luthor is wearing his iconic green and purple suit, suggesting the film will focus on the dynamic between Superman and Lex Luthor, rather than just Superman’s story.

I just read an interview with James Gunn in Variety, and he’s confirmed what a lot of us suspected: the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie is fundamentally about the dynamic between Superman and Lex Luthor. He actually sees a surprising amount of himself in both characters – though thankfully, not in Lex’s homicidal tendencies! He did add a little caveat, though, saying things could shift depending on how the Warner Bros./Netflix deal plays out. It’s an interesting wrinkle, to say the least.

For me, this story really comes down to Clark and Lex. I honestly see parts of myself in both of them. I get Lex’s drive and how focused he is – though obviously, I’d never go as far as he does! But I also really connect with Superman’s faith in humanity and that strong, down-to-earth goodness he has. It feels like they represent different sides of my own personality.

‘Superman’ Is the “Hardest” Movie James Gunn Has Ever Made

James Gunn has been hinting at a significant role for Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman sequel. Though some initially believed the film would focus entirely on Luthor, Gunn’s latest comments reveal that the story will center around both Superman and Lex Luthor, making them the main characters.

Get ready for Brainiac! The famous DC villain is officially joining the big screen in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie. Actor Lars Eidinger, known for All the Light We Cannot See, will play the incredibly intelligent alien robot who collects entire cities in miniature glass bottles. Brainiac’s arrival will likely force Superman and Lex Luthor to team up and save the world, though it’s safe to say their alliance won’t last long.

James Gunn, who is writing and directing the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film, shared that making a Superman movie has been the most challenging project of his career.

Making this movie was the biggest challenge of my career. The first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was a close second. With ‘Guardians,’ we were creating a totally new and unique part of the Marvel universe. But this film required me to reimagine something people already thought they knew. It’s funny, because it actually ended up being the most faithful adaptation of the comic books I’ve ever directed, even more so than my other superhero movies.

The new film, Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled to come out on July 9, 2027. It’s the first of four planned movies in what James Gunn refers to as the “Superman Saga,” a larger story he envisions for the character. Gunn has explained that he’s focused on creating a cohesive, long-term narrative for Superman across these four films.
