DC Studios co-head James Gunn compares the upcoming DCU film to one of his biggest superhero hits.
In an interview with *Rolling Stone*, James Gunn characterized the upcoming *Supergirl* movie as a “space adventure.” He then compared it to *Guardians of the Galaxy*, the 2014 Marvel film he directed with Nicole Perlman. *Guardians of the Galaxy* was a huge success, earning over $773 million worldwide on a budget of under $200 million, and it received overwhelmingly positive reviews, achieving a 92% rating on both Rotten Tomatoes’ “Certified Fresh” and “Popcornmeter” scores.
The movie *Supergirl* is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. This will be her first solo adventure, following a cameo appearance in the recent *Superman* film starring David Corenswet. Although Supergirl didn’t appear much in *Superman*, her dog, Krypto, played a significant role. After the credits, viewers saw Alcock’s character enter Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, looking for Krypto while still recovering from the events of the previous night.
In addition to Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, the film will star David Krumholtz as her father, Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as her mother, Alura In-Ze. Eve Ridley will play Ruthye Marye Knoll, a determined alien seeking revenge, and Matthias Schoenaerts will portray the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills. The movie is heavily inspired by the critically acclaimed 2021 comic book series *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow*, known for its fresh take on the superhero genre. Jason Momoa will also appear in the film, continuing his role as a major DC Comics character.
Why One DC Comics Title Was So Important to the Development of the DCU’s Supergirl
The screenwriter discussed her work on the film, which involved truly understanding the character of Kara Zor-El. She explained that she studied many *Supergirl* comics, including those by Tom King, to gain deeper insight. Nogueira realized it was difficult to reconcile the character’s traditionally optimistic portrayal with the trauma of witnessing Krypton’s destruction. After reading the comics, she felt she’d finally found the core of the character, saying, ‘There she is.’
Supergirl is currently slated to soar into theaters on June 26, 2026.
