James Cameron recently shared good news about his plans to remake the 1966 science fiction film, Fantastic Voyage. Fresh off the release of his latest movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash – a follow-up to the 2009 and 2022 Avatar films – the 71-year-old director and producer is continuing to work on several projects, switching between directing and producing roles.
Directed by Richard Fleischer (known for films like Soylent Green and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), the 1966 movie Fantastic Voyage tells the story of a brave team of explorers. They’re shrunk down to microscopic size and sent traveling inside a human body—specifically, through the bloodstream of a scientist—on a mission to clear a dangerous blood clot. The film features a cast including Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch, Edmond O’Brien, Donald Pleasence, and Arthur Kennedy.
I’ve been hearing about James Cameron’s plans to remake Fantastic Voyage for ages – it’s been in development since the early 2000s, it seems! But it sounds like things are really moving forward now. He recently told Pete Hammond in an interview that he’s actively working on it and is hoping to start filming sometime next year. I’m so excited – it’s a project he’s clearly passionate about and has been developing for a long time.
Cameron announced they’ve found a new writer and director for the project, though he will still be a producer. He stated, “I’ll be producing, and I’m working with a director right now on a new script. So yeah, we’re gonna do it.” Several well-known directors, including Roland Emmerich, Shawn Levy, and Guillermo del Toro, have been considered for Cameron’s Fantastic Voyage at different times over the years.

Cameron has several projects already planned, so it likely makes more sense for him to produce Fantastic Voyage rather than direct it. He’s also planning two more Avatar films, but their development depends on how well Avatar: Fire and Ash performs in theaters – and so far, it’s doing well.
Cameron recently finished producing a film called Painter, directed by Garrett Warren and written by Derek Kolstad. He’s also reportedly directing a movie based on the book The Informationist, and is considering adapting Charles Pellegrino’s Ghosts of Hiroshima for the big screen.
Some viewers are questioning if Cameron will personally oversee all the ambitious films he’s announced, but considering his recent productivity, his statement about a potential Fantastic Voyage movie seems plausible. He hasn’t revealed a director yet, so we can likely expect more information about this remake soon.
