James Cameron, the director of Avatar, has given a hopeful sign about Avatar 4, following the disappointing box office results of the recent film, Avatar: Fire and Ash.
The third movie picks up where the last one left off, with Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) – now a Na’vi himself – and his family battling to save their home planet, Pandora, from a powerful organization on Earth that wants to mine it for resources.
Released in December 2025, Avatar: Fire and Ash received mixed reactions. While critics gave it a 60% approval rating, audiences overwhelmingly liked it, with a score of 90%. TopMob described the film as feeling repetitive and overly long compared to the first two Avatar movies.
While the third movie still earned a significant $1.48 billion worldwide, it made less than the first ($2.93 billion) and second ($2.32 billion) films. This led to questions about whether future installments, like Avatar 4, would be made, but director James Cameron recently shared an unexpected announcement about the franchise’s future.

So, even though Avatar: The Way of Water didn’t exactly blow everyone away with reviews or sales, James Cameron hinted at the Saturn Awards that Avatar 4 is probably happening. He didn’t give a straight ‘yes,’ but he definitely seemed pretty confident about it. As a fan, I’m cautiously optimistic – I mean, he’s James Cameron, but that last movie didn’t quite live up to the hype!
The report also mentioned Cameron is listening to what viewers thought about the previous movie, especially regarding its length and complicated plot. This likely means the next film might be shorter and have a more focused story.
Sigourney Weaver recently discussed the future of Avatar 4 and 5 with TopMob. While she admitted the sequels weren’t completely certain at the time, she expressed hope that the series will continue.

She expressed hope that they’ll be able to create parts four and five, saying there’s still a lot of story left to explore and that the potential for future installments is strong.
Given that the third Avatar movie made over $1 billion globally, it’s likely 20th Century Studios and Disney will continue making Avatar films. This is especially true considering Disney World already features a large Avatar-themed area called Pandora – The World of Avatar.
