James Cameron Recruits Pop Icon for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Original Song

In a surprising collaboration, filmmaker James Cameron has asked pop star Miley Cyrus to create an original song for his upcoming film, Avatar: Fire and Ash. Both Cameron and Cyrus recently received the Disney Legend award, alongside other honorees like Harrison Ford and Angela Bassett as part of the 2024 class. While many expected Billie Eilish to write the song – she hinted at a 3D project with Cameron earlier this year – he ultimately chose to work with a fellow Disney Legend.

Miley Cyrus announced on Instagram that she wrote and recorded a new song, “Dream As One,” for the upcoming film Avatar: Fire and Ash. She collaborated with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt on the track. The song will be released on November 14th, before the movie comes out on December 19th, as shared on the official Avatar Instagram page. Cyrus also mentioned that the film’s story and her own life inspired the song.

I’m incredibly proud to contribute an original song to ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ created with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. Having experienced the devastation of fire and the journey of rebuilding my life, this project means a lot to me personally. Thank you, Jim, for letting me transform that experience into something hopeful through music. The film’s messages of togetherness, recovery, and love truly speak to my heart, and being a part of the ‘Avatar’ world is a dream come true.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Joins Race for the Best Original Song at Oscars

Miley Cyrus has had a remarkably productive 2025. Following the release of her album, Something Beautiful on May 30th, and a corresponding movie just a week later, she now has an original song featured in Avatar: Fire and Ash – which could be the year’s biggest blockbuster, potentially surpassing the $2 billion earned by previous Avatar films. It was once common for major movies to include original songs by popular artists, but that practice has become less frequent in recent years, even though soundtracks like those for Barbie and Twisters proved that original songs can still become huge hits.

The Avatar movies are known for having original songs play during the credits. Leona Lewis sang “I See You” for the first Avatar film in 2009, and The Weeknd recorded “All is Lost” for Avatar: The Way of Water. Like James Cameron’s choice of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” for Titanic – a song that was a massive hit, topping charts in 25 countries, becoming the best-selling single of 1998, and winning an Oscar – these three original Avatar songs clearly aim for similar success.

Although previous songs from the Avatar films didn’t receive Academy Award nominations, all eyes are on Miley Cyrus’s new song, “Dream as One,” to see if it can. Many were surprised when her earlier song, “Beautiful That Way,” from The Last Showgirl, wasn’t nominated. This year’s Best Original Song contest is already shaping up to be a battle between Sinners and KPop: Demon Hunters, even before considering the songs from Wicked for Good and the reliably nominated Diane Warren. However, it’s possible that a year from now, Miley Cyrus could be an Academy Award nominee.
