James Cameron Gets Honest About Avatar’s Uncertain Future

As a huge fan, I’m getting really excited for the third Avatar movie! But director James Cameron has been talking recently, and it sounds like the future of the series isn’t totally set in stone. Disney announced plans for four sequels all at once when they bought 20th Century Fox, continuing the story from the first Avatar back in 2009. However, Cameron’s hinted that the last two movies don’t have confirmed release dates and might not actually happen. It’s a little unsettling, honestly, because I’m already invested in where this story could go!

It’s not simply about whether people will go see Avatar: Fire and Ash in theaters. The first two Avatar movies were huge successes, but the way film franchises—or what director James Cameron calls “sagas”—are made and marketed has evolved a lot recently.

He explained that audience preferences and the market are always changing, and the film industry is currently struggling. It hasn’t recovered from the impact of COVID-19, leading to a roughly 35% decline in business since early 2020. Despite this downturn, production and effects costs keep increasing. He believes this combination could eventually reach a point where making large-scale films becomes unsustainable.

It’s a worrying trend that movies are becoming more expensive to produce while simultaneously earning less money. Cameron explores potential solutions to this problem facing big-budget films, suggesting focusing on unique cinematic experiences that can’t be replicated at home and finding ways to lower production costs, potentially through the use of artificial intelligence.

Cameron wonders if there’s a way to revitalize movie theaters. He believes high-quality visuals, like those created with 3D, can draw audiences back in, and he’s working hard to achieve that. He also suggests that artificial intelligence might help lower the costs of visual effects, though he admits he hasn’t used AI in his work before – notably, none was used in the creation of Avatar.

The Future of Avatar Is Not Set In Stone

Released in 2009, Avatar became a massive global success, earning $2.9 billion. Its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, followed in 2022, grossing $2.3 billion worldwide. Both films transport audiences to the alien world of Pandora, home to the Na’vi people, and center on Jake Sully, a human who connects with the Na’vi through advanced technology and builds a life and family there. The upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash continues this story, and its success could be crucial for the production of the fourth and fifth films in the Avatar series.

You can now watch both Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water on Disney+. The third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will be released in movie theaters on December 19th.
