James Cameron recently shared that The Wizard of Oz is his all-time favorite movie – he loves it so much he once considered directing a large-scale prequel. He’s not the only one who feels this way, and it’s surprising to learn he almost took on the challenge of adapting the story for a new film.
James Cameron recently shared on the podcast The Town with Matthew Belloni that he almost produced the movie Wicked about 15 years ago, shortly after its Broadway premiere. He’s a big fan of the story and The Wizard of Oz is one of his favorite films. However, Cameron explained he ultimately decided against the project because he wasn’t satisfied with the music.
Just because James Cameron is known for action and sci-fi films like The Terminator, Aliens, Titanic, and Avatar doesn’t rule out a musical in his future. He hasn’t made any commitments, but he did mention that The Wizard of Oz – his all-time favorite movie – is a musical, which suggests it’s something he appreciates and might consider.
As a movie critic, I often wonder ‘what if?’ And right now, I’m thinking about what a different Wicked movie might have looked like if James Cameron had directed. He’s a master of blockbusters, and while Wicked is already a huge success, I can’t help but imagine if Cameron’s touch could have elevated it to an even more massive scale. It’s a fascinating alternate reality to consider – could he have turned a hit musical into an absolute cinematic phenomenon?
Despite their split, both Cameron and Wicked appear to be thriving. Cameron is preparing to launch a new project in December, while Wicked continues its successful run, attracting large audiences and receiving positive reviews.
This marks the first time Cameron has shared that he was once close to directing a large-scale, popular film, but ultimately decided against it.
James Cameron Almost Directed Wicked
The movie Wicked: For Good came out in theaters last weekend, and people are now talking about whether there will be a sequel. The key will be finding a compelling story that makes going back to the world of Oz worthwhile.
Look, Wicked and Wicked: For Good have done incredibly well, but honestly, they’re not in the same league as Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water. Avatar, which came out way back in 2009, made almost $3 billion worldwide – it was a phenomenon! Then, in 2022, The Way of Water came along and pulled in another $2.3 billion. Now everyone’s wondering if Avatar: Fire and Ash can live up to those numbers, and we won’t have to wait long to find out!
I’m so excited! Wicked: For Good is finally out in movie theaters! And if you want to get ready for it, the first Wicked movie is available to stream on Netflix – I watched it right before Wicked: For Good came out. Plus, you can revisit the classic The Wizard of Oz over on HBO Max!
You can now watch both Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water on Disney+. The newest film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, arrives in theaters on December 19th. Director James Cameron intends to make two more Avatar movies, but their production depends on how well Avatar: Fire and Ash does in theaters. So far, it looks like the new film is off to a good start, so those sequels are still likely to happen.
