As a huge movie fan, I always find it interesting to hear what directors think of other films. Martin Campbell, who’s directed a couple of James Bond movies – GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan and the fantastic Casino Royale with Daniel Craig – recently shared some advice with Denis Villeneuve and the team making the next Bond film. It’s crazy to think the first Bond movie, Dr. No, came out way back in 1962! Campbell really started shaping the modern Bond films with GoldenEye after a 33-year gap since the original.
In a recent interview with Gold Derby, producer Barbara Campbell advised director Denis Villeneuve against drastically changing the James Bond formula, bluntly telling him not to “mess with it.” She explained that since Daniel Craig has finished his run as Bond, the franchise doesn’t need a complete overhaul – just a strong, well-made Bond film, as she enthusiastically put it.
Campbell believes the James Bond universe still has many compelling stories to tell, particularly given current global events. He’s hoping director Denis Villeneuve will maintain the qualities that have made the franchise successful for so long.
The director believes his James Bond films, GoldenEye and Casino Royale, would still be exciting and impactful if they came out now, just as they were when they were originally released in 1995 and 2006.
