Jutta Leerdam won a gold medal in the women’s 1,000-meter speedskating event at the 2026 Winter Olympics, setting a new record with a time of 1:12.31. Her incredible performance on the Italian ice even brought her fiancé, Jake Paul, to tears.
Femke Kok, Leerdam’s teammate, had previously broken the Olympic record, creating a tense atmosphere for Leerdam’s final run. Racing against the defending champion, Miho Takagi, Leerdam skated even faster and won the gold medal.
She won her match while her fiancé, Jake Paul, watched from the audience. Fans who follow the couple on social media were especially excited to see him there.

Leerdam lowers Olympic mark again in final heat
After a fantastic race, Leerdam described being in a tough spot during the final pairing. “It was surreal for everyone to watch,” she said. “This win feels incredible – like the perfect finishing touch to my career. It’s just amazing, absolutely perfect.”
The 2022 silver medalist, cheered on by a large crowd wearing orange, maintained a consistent pace throughout the race. She finished strong, raising her arm in victory and celebrating with a shout. Overjoyed, she skated to the edge of the rink near Paul, blowing kisses and making a heart shape with her hands, tears streaming down her face.
“My makeup was everywhere,” Leerdam added. “But that’s a good thing, I think.”

Wow, Kok absolutely crushed it with a time of 1:12.59! Not only did she get silver, but she actually broke the Olympic record! Takagi had set the previous best in Beijing at 1:13.19, but Kok beat that, and Takagi ended up with the bronze this time around. It was amazing to watch!
Paul described Femke Leerdam’s Olympic record-breaking performance, saying, ‘She just broke the Olympic record – it was the best thing ever!’
Kok said she briefly thought her own mark might hold.
I felt like I performed well, and hoped it would be enough to win a gold medal,” she explained. “But she was slightly quicker than me, and I have nothing but respect for that.
Brittany Bowe, an American speed skater, finished fourth in her last Olympic competition at age 37, narrowly missing a third Olympic bronze medal. Fellow American Erin Jackson placed sixth.
I’m really looking forward to watching Leerdam race again next Sunday – she’s competing in the 500 meters. It’s crazy how much success she’s already had! She went into the Olympics with a huge collection of 12 World Championship medals – six of them gold! Two of those golds came in the 1,000-meter race, one in 2020 and another just last year in 2023.
She’s been particularly strong in distance events this season, winning three out of four World Cup races. Notably, she recently beat Kok in Germany last month.
Bowe pointed to the spotlight surrounding Leerdam as she reflected on the performance.
Bowe explained that her competitor is truly unique, possessing a level of influence in speedskating that no one before her has achieved. She expressed her admiration and congratulated her on her accomplishments.
It’s hard to fathom the immense pressure and expectations she’s faced over the last few years, especially right now. To perform at such a high level, breaking an Olympic record, is truly impressive. I understand firsthand how much effort and stress it takes to compete at that level.
During the 2026 Olympics, Spanish figure skater Tomàs-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté almost had to alter his performance, which featured characters from the movie Minions, due to a potential copyright issue.
