Amidst Karla Sofía Gascón‘s day-long break from posting, director Jacques Audiard shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate about her past tweets. Following reports that Netflix would no longer be sending Gascón to the Critics Choice Awards or Producers Guild Awards, Audiard spoke candidly with Deadline. He reflected on his feelings towards Gascón’s comments, describing them as falling into a pit. “It’s challenging for me to recall the work I did with Karla Sofía,” he confided. “The bond of trust we shared, the remarkable environment we had on set that was truly built on trust. And when you have such a relationship and then read something that person has said, things that are incredibly hurtful and deserving of being hated, of course that relationship is impacted.
Audiard stated that he hasn’t talked to Gascón yet and has no intention of doing so because she seems to be on a self-destructive path, which he doesn’t want to disrupt. He further expressed his support for Emilia Pérez, another acting nominee, as well as the film’s team in the future.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I must acknowledge that I’ve been faced with some criticism regarding my film, “Emilia Pérez.” This stems from previous remarks I made about Spanish being the language of a developing country, which I now understand was inappropriate and for which I apologize.
However, it’s important to clarify that this film is not an attempt at documentary-style storytelling about Mexico or the cartels. Instead, it’s a work of art with its own unique narrative.
In defense of my creative choices, I’ve said, “Opera has psychological limitations. It seems I’m being judged in the court of realism.” I stand by the film’s exaggerated portrayal of Mexico, believing that cinema serves to provoke thought and ask questions, not to provide answers.
Unfortunately, it appears that this week, my task has been to answer those very questions raised by the film, rather than creating new ones.
