Jacob Elordi on Why Losing Weight to Play a Prisoner of War in ‘Narrow Road to the Deep North’ ‘Wasn’t Torture’: ‘There Was a Peace That Came Over All of Us’

For Jacob Elordi, shedding pounds was necessary to portray a prisoner of war in “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” directed by Justin Kurzel. Yet, he didn’t find it an ordeal or painful process.

When EbMaster inquired about my weight loss journey during a Berlin Film Festival press conference, I shared that it had been a remarkably soothing experience for me. I was fortunate to undergo this transformation alongside my cherished cohorts whom I fondly refer to as “the lads.

He expressed his belief that something deeply meaningful transpired, as it wasn’t an ordeal of torture. A sense of tranquility enveloped us all. It was a form of love that surpassed our usual experiences because everything else was stripped away, leaving only the essential questions: “Is my friend alright? Am I okay? What can I do to help? Titled after Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel, “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” narrates the story of Dorrigo Evans, a man who was once a prisoner of war in Japan, forced to work on the Thai-Burma railway. The series delves into his tormented mind, as he grapples with the ghosts of his past, particularly the affair he had with his uncle’s wife, Amy. In addition to Elordi, the movie “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” features actors such as Ciarán Hinds, Odessa Young, Olivia DeJonge, and Simon Baker. This film is directed by Australian director Justin Kurzel, who gained recognition for his work on “Macbeth” in 2015, “Assassin’s Creed” in 2016, “Nitram” in 2021, and the recent release “The Order.

Actor Baran Elordi, who gained prominence on HBO’s “Euphoria,” has been busy expanding his acting resume lately with roles in movies like Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn,” Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada” and the upcoming “On Swift Horses.” In the future, audiences can catch him as the Monster in Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and as Heathcliff alongside Margot Robbie in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights.
