Jacob Elordi, Andrew Garfield and Sean Penn Dined With Morocco’s HRH Prince Moulay Rachid at Epic Gala Event Hosted Inside 16th-Century Palace Badi

As a seasoned cinephile who has attended numerous film festivals across the globe, I must say that the Marrakech Film Festival’s grandiose 21st edition left me utterly spellbound. The gala dinner hosted by HRH Prince Moulay Rachid and Princess Lalla Oum Keltoum within the hallowed walls of Palace Badi was nothing short of a royal affair, a cinematic fairy tale come to life.

I had the incredible privilege of attending the most stunning edition yet of the Marrakech Film Festival. It wasn’t just about walking the red carpet; it was an exclusive invitation to step into the historic Palace Badi from the 16th century, graciously opened for a grand dinner hosted by HM Mohammed VI and HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, accompanied by his beloved wife, Princess Lalla Oum Keltoum. What an unforgettable experience!

The festive event commenced with greetings as the president of Marrakech Festival’s jury, Luca Guadagnino, along with jurors Jacob Elordi, Andrew Garfield, Virginie Efira, and other esteemed guests like Tim Burton, Monica Bellucci, Sean Penn, David Cronenberg, Justine Triet, Justin Kurzel, Francois Ozon, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, and Marie-Ange Luciani were individually presented to His Royal Highness Moulay Rachid and Princess Lalla OumKeltoum.

At the festival, Melita Toscan du Plantier, the ambassador, was stationed near the prince, introducing each person to him. Interestingly, it appeared as though he already knew everyone, but that didn’t stop her from making introductions. Despite being founded 21 years ago by Mohammed VI, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid is renowned for his love of cinema and has been deeply immersed in the cultural event since 2002.

21 distinguished guests, including Elordi, Burton, Bellucci, Garfield, Penn, and Kurzel, gathered around the Prince’s grand, circular table adorned with red roses. The meal, featuring multiple courses, showcased traditional dishes such as a lamb tagine, couscous, and a Moroccan pastry known as a pastilla. A 12-piece orchestra performed an eclectic mix of tunes, including “Palladio” by Karl Jenkins, “Tango” by Richard Galliano, “Secret Garden” by Rolf Løvland, and “Pavane” by Gabriel Fauré, eliciting applause numerous times throughout the night. In addition to the jury and honorary guests, this gala dinner united key figures from the film industry, such as AMPAS president Janet Yang, Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, co-CEOs of MK2 Nathanael and Elisha Karmitz, producer and financier Stuart Ford, entertainment lawyer Elsa Huisman, and producer Rosalie Varda, among others.

The festival opened with Kurzel’s The Order” and will wrap on Dec. 7 with an awards ceremony.
