Jacksepticeye pointed out that YouTube’s rules seem inconsistent. His gameplay video of Resident Evil Requiem was age-restricted, but other similar videos weren’t.
As a huge Resident Evil fan, I’ve been playing the new game, Requiem, and it’s seriously intense! It’s a non-stop action experience, and Capcom hasn’t pulled any punches with the horror. You can really go to town on the zombies – I’m talking sawing them in half or blowing their heads off with a shotgun. It’s brutal, but in the best way!
Jacksepticeye, a popular YouTuber, explained that a recent video of him playing a game was age-restricted due to violent content. However, he noticed that other videos of him playing the same game weren’t treated the same way, which he found confusing.
Jacksepticeye wants more consistency in YouTube’s moderation
When a video has age restrictions on YouTube, viewers need to sign in to prove they meet the age requirement before they can watch it. This usually leads to fewer views and fewer ads running on the video.
Only the fourth video in Jacksepticeye’s five-part playthrough of Requiem received an age restriction, and the reason YouTube gave him was unexpected.
Initially, the platform stated the video was restricted because of offensive language. YouTube specified that this was due to moderate swearing in the title or thumbnail, and also mentioned that swearing anywhere in the video could cause restrictions.
The YouTuber was confused because he hadn’t used any inappropriate language in the title or image for his fourth video, and his level of swearing was consistent with his other videos that hadn’t been affected.
YouTube reviewed the video after it was brought to their attention and confirmed it would stay restricted. They explained this was because it violated their Community Guidelines, specifically those against showing violent, graphic, or disturbing content – including things like medical procedures, animal abuse, or excessive violence in games.
Jacksepticeye acknowledged that the 1.4 million views on Part 4 of his series were still very good, even though it was released later in the playthrough. He then explained how YouTube age-restricting a video significantly reduces its visibility, which he jokingly referred to as “video homicide,” using his own experience as an example to inform others.
What’s most frustrating is that the rules seem to be applied inconsistently. I’m told content is flagged for swearing or violence, but then I see others doing the same thing without any restrictions. It feels like everyone is being treated differently for the same issues, and that’s unfair.
YouTube hasn’t officially commented on Jacksepticeye’s video yet, but he’s not the only creator who has pointed out these issues with the platform over time.
Okay, so a lot of people probably remember when I spoke out about something that happened with the platform back in 2023. I was playing a really popular horror game, and my video got age-restricted, which was super frustrating. What made it even worse was that other creators, who weren’t Black, were playing the same game and their videos were totally fine. It just didn’t seem right, you know?
