Even though Battlefield 6 was the top-selling game in the US for 2025 – surpassing Call of Duty for the first time – the number of players has dropped significantly. It’s lost 80% of its players on Steam since it was first released.
The recent decrease in player numbers includes those from Battlefield’s free battle royale game, Redsec, which saw a drop in players soon after the release of the newest Battlefield game, as both are tracked together as one title.
On December 28th, popular YouTube creator JackFrags published a video expressing concern that the next Battlefield game, often referred to as ‘Battlefield 6,’ needs significant improvements.
He explained what he believes caused the game’s player numbers to decline sharply, stating they “dropped off a cliff,” and offered suggestions for improvement.
He explained that the game isn’t receiving enough updates to stay interesting. He feels that adding only two new maps each season isn’t sufficient, and Battlefield Studios should aim for three or four, as they’ve talked about before.
He added that future updates for Battlefield 6 should prioritize adding more maps and playable characters over temporary events and quickly forgotten game modes.
He also pointed out several key areas needing significant work, such as making the gameplay more engaging, fixing the broken Portal and server browser, improving the clunky menu design, and enhancing the quality of the cosmetic items, which he described as poorly made.
JackFrags gives Battlefield Redsec a scathing review
However, his harshest criticism was reserved for the Redsec battle royale game, which he declared would be a failure from the start.
He believed they had made a critical error. Launching the game at the end of October, just two and a half weeks after the initial release, was premature. Furthermore, releasing it two days before Arc Raiders – a game they likely knew would be very popular for months – was a significant misstep.
The game feels unfinished and could have been much better with more development time. Right now, the gameplay isn’t very enjoyable, the maps aren’t well-designed, and there are several issues, including slow servers, poor loot, tanks that are too strong, and very slow progress for players who aren’t spending money.
Honestly, I think the smartest move for them would be to basically start over with the game when it’s really finished and has all the features it needs. And, I know it sounds drastic, but they should totally rename it ‘Battlefield Royale’ – it just makes so much sense!
He still believes Battlefield 6 is a great and enjoyable game, and that the Battlefield series is making a strong comeback. However, he acknowledges that the developers may have made some early errors. He points out that everyone makes mistakes, but there’s always a chance to learn from them and improve the game going forward.
