and Stan have released a sneak peek at their new TV series based on William Golding’s classic novel, *Lord of the Flies*. Jack Thorne, who created the series *Adolescence*, is writing the adaptation, and Marc Munden, known for his work on *National Treasure*, is directing.
Recently released photos show the actors for the new series filming in Malaysia. The show will have four episodes and is the first television adaptation created with the full support of the author’s family. “Sex Education”‘s Eleven is producing the series for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, with Stan handling the Australian broadcast. Sony Pictures will be responsible for international distribution.
The upcoming film, *Lord of the Flies*, will feature Winston Sawyers as Ralph, Lox Pratt as Jack, David McKenna as Piggy, and Ike Talbut as Simon. Thomas Connor will play Roger, while Noah and Cassius Flemming will share the roles of twins Sam and Eric. Cornelius Brandreth is cast as Maurice, and Tom Page-Turner as Bill. In addition to these actors, the production includes a large ensemble of over 30 boys who will portray the older and younger boys stranded on the island.
Jack Thorne, the writer behind the play *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* and the Netflix series *Adolescence*, is adapting the novel while staying true to its story. The new adaptation will be set on a Pacific island in the early 1950s and will delve into the book’s central ideas about what it means to be human, the end of childhood, and traditional ideas of masculinity.
First published in 1954, *Lord of the Flies* is William Golding’s first novel. It follows a group of British schoolboys who are stranded on a deserted island. As they try to create their own society, things fall apart, and they descend into violence. The story explores themes of goodness, leadership, and how people behave when rules are removed. *Lord of the Flies* has become a cultural icon, inspiring three movies, a play, a radio drama, and a graphic novel adaptation.
As much as I adore *Lord of the Flies*, it’s constantly finding itself on banned book lists in schools, which always saddens me. Usually, the controversy stems from its pretty intense themes – the violence is definitely disturbing, and some people take issue with what they see as problematic language or a pessimistic view of human nature, especially when it’s portrayed through the actions of children. It’s a tough read, and I get why it sparks debate, but I think it’s a powerful book that deserves to be discussed, not hidden away.
The BBC’s New Lord of the Flies Adaptation Takes a Unique Approach to the Story
The BBC has announced the titles for each episode of its new *Lord of the Flies* series. Each of the four episodes will be named after a central character: Ralph, Piggy, Simon, and Jack. The BBC explains that this structure will provide a fresh and unique look at the boys’ struggles and how they deal with being stranded.
As a film buff, I was really excited to hear Thorne talk about this project! He said they still can’t quite believe they’re getting to adapt this gorgeous book for the screen. Apparently, the first few days of shooting have been amazing – the cast is phenomenal, and the director, Marc, is really pushing boundaries with the visuals, beautifully capturing both the story and the incredible scenery of Malaysia. Thorne clearly thinks Marc is a fantastic storyteller, and the whole thing just sounds incredibly promising!
The BBC’s Lord of the Flies adaptation does not have a release date at this time.
