It’s been fifteen years since the Oscar-winning actor last appeared in a movie. His final role was in the 2010 romantic comedy How Do You Know, alongside Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson.
James L. Brooks, the director of How Do You Know, has a history of successful collaborations with Jack Nicholson, including films like As Good as It Gets (1997) and Terms of Endearment (1983). Recently, Brooks discussed the possibility of Nicholson returning to acting after a long break.
Mel Brooks recently praised Jack Nicholson as the best actor of his generation and hinted that Nicholson isn’t retired. Nicholson made a brief appearance on the SNL50: The Anniversary Special in February, and according to Brooks, Nicholson is still considering new scripts and will likely return to acting.
James Brooks and Jack Nicholson have collaborated on several films, including How Do You Know, Terms of Endearment, and As Good as It Gets. Brooks also directed Nicholson in the 1987 film Broadcast News. Brooks is currently experiencing a career resurgence with his new movie, Ella McCay, which is now in theaters. This is his first film release since How Do You Know, and it stars Emma Mackey, Woody Harrelson, Kumail Nanjiani, Jamie Lee Curtis, Albert Brooks, and Jack Lowden.
One of Nicholson’s Best Movies is Being Adapted for TV
Jack Nicholson is well-known for his performance in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, directed by Milos Forman, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor playing R.P. McMurphy. Recently, it was announced that after 50 years, a new television series will be created based on the film.
Paul Zaentz, nephew of the original film’s producer Saul Zaentz, now owns the rights to the story. The new series will retell the events from the perspective of Chief Bromden, played by Will Sampson in the original.
Producer Saul Zaentz announced he’s partnered with the family of the late Ken Kesey to create a television series based on his work. The show will initially focus on the story from the perspective of Chief Bromden, covering his experiences after escaping the hospital.
He explained that he has no plans to re-shoot scenes from the original film simply for the sake of updating them. According to Zaentz, over the past 50 years, many studios, directors, and producers have approached them about remaking the movie, but they’ve always refused unless the remake offered something new. He stated that recreating the film exactly as the original director, Milos Forman, did would be disrespectful.
There’s no release date yet for a series based on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. If you enjoyed the films starring Jack Nicholson and Albert Brooks, you can watch As Good as It Gets on Netflix.
