With the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie nearing, Nintendo and Illumination are already planning more films. In a recent interview, Jack Black hinted that the next movie could be released as early as 2029.
In 2023, Nintendo effectively launched its own shared universe of films with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While critics weren’t overly impressed, the film proved incredibly popular with audiences, earning a massive $1.3 billion worldwide.
Honestly, it was only a matter of time! After the Mario movie blew up, the studio’s totally looking to build out that whole universe. I’ve heard they’re working on a Donkey Kong movie too, which sounds awesome, and a lot of fans (including me!) are hoping they’ll make a Luigi’s Mansion movie as well. Fingers crossed!
Although Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed it, a third Super Mario movie is likely happening. Jack Black, who voices Bowser, may have hinted at the film and when it could be released.
Jack Black hints at third Super Mario movie
Jack and Donald Glover, who voiced Yoshi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, playfully made up a funny song for Bowser during an interview with Cinemex. However, it’s something else from the interview that’s really getting people talking.
Jack jokingly suggested the next Mario movie might not come out until 2029. While it’s not a confirmation, many fans think he accidentally revealed a possible release year for a third film.
Someone on X (formerly Twitter) noticed that Jack Black may have hinted at a third Mario movie scheduled for 2029. This possible confirmation came during a recent interview with Cinemex, while Black was improvising a song about Bowser.
I saw something crazy on Reddit – someone thinks Jack Black might have accidentally let slip that the next Super Mario movie could be coming out in 2029! It’s just a rumor right now, but it’s got everyone talking.

The recent announcements have sparked a lot of excitement among fans, with many thrilled at the possibility of a new movie. One fan expressed their enthusiasm, saying, “I can’t wait for 2029!” Another wrote, “A third Mario movie in 2029? That’s amazing!”
People are guessing what the announcement might be, and some think it could be related to the rumored “Super Mario Odyssey Movie.”
Mario fans react to Waluigi comment

Someone reminded Jack that he previously mentioned not seeing Waluigi or Wario in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. He then hinted at a possible appearance in a future installment, jokingly knocking on wood for good luck.
A fan noticed that during the interview, the speaker seemed to hint Waluigi might not be in the third movie. They mentioned saying they were hoping for his inclusion, while also knocking on wood – a gesture suggesting uncertainty.
People have different ideas about what happened. Some believe Jack Black was simply joking or speculating. One person commented, “He’s probably just being playful,” but added that it’s impossible to know for sure.
Someone else added that they didn’t think he knew the exact release date, but he’s guessing it will be three years after the last Mario movie, which is a reasonable assumption.
One person pointed out he was likely just making a lighthearted comment about the three-year wait between the first and second films. Another agreed it was probably a joke, but added it wasn’t entirely far-fetched, and shouldn’t be taken as official news.
Many online viewers are less enthusiastic about the films. One person joked that we can expect a new Mario movie every three years, and another pointed out that this would likely be a very profitable strategy for Nintendo, adding over a billion dollars in revenue every three years.
Another source noted it wasn’t unexpected, given the first film earned $1.3 billion three years ago. As long as the new film, Galaxy, performs reasonably well – which is likely – a sequel is almost certain and would probably follow a similar three-year development schedule.
