The Wizarding World has become incredibly popular worldwide, stemming from J.K. Rowling’s books, plays, theme parks, and the Harry Potter films (currently available on HBO Max). Recently, the franchise has faced some challenges due to Rowling’s contentious opinions regarding transgender women. This caused several individuals involved with the series to separate themselves from the author, and following comments from Emma Watson about their relationship, Rowling has now published an extensive statement outlining her perspective.
A number of members from the Harry Potter cast has responded to her comments about trans people, particularly Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who put their support behind that community. Following the latter’s viral interview, where she spoke about Rowling opening doors while also mentioning their political differences, the author took to X (Twitter) to share her own thoughts. Part of the response reads:
Over the past few years, both Emma and Dan have repeatedly signaled their belief that our past working relationship entitles them – indeed, compels them – to publicly criticize me and my opinions. Even years after their time working on Potter ended, they continue to act as unofficial representatives and commentators on the world I built.
It’s clear the cast of Harry Potter is very familiar with the series, having spent ten years filming the eight movies. However, Rowling appears to be upset with the actors expressing their opinions, especially regarding the world she developed.

When Daniel Radcliffe publicly shared his thoughts on J.K. Rowling, he also acknowledged the difficulties faced by Harry Potter fans in the LGBTQ+ community who are struggling to reconcile their love for the series with the author’s recent statements. In fact, some Potter fans have stopped supporting the franchise entirely. Rowling then continued her lengthy tweet regarding the cast members, stating:
It’s difficult to stop feeling protective of people you’ve known since childhood. I’ve always remembered how vulnerable some of the young actors were while filming in a large, intimidating studio. Because of this, I’ve consistently turned down requests from reporters to discuss Emma specifically, especially regarding the controversy surrounding JK Rowling. Ironically, I specifically asked the producers to ensure she wasn’t harassed because of anything I might say. I didn’t want her to be targeted as a result of my comments.
The story continues to grab headlines, as LGBTQ+ people and their supporters voice criticism towards the author, while some fans have strongly defended her. It’s a confusing and rapidly changing situation, and the writer says she’s attempted to shield Watson and other actors from it. However, back in March, J.K. Rowling publicly criticized the actors.
In her recent post, Rowling claimed that Watson only recently changed her tune: writing:
The biggest irony is this: if Emma hadn’t recently told interviewers she loves and values me – a shift in strategy I believe she made because publicly criticizing me isn’t as popular as it used to be – I probably wouldn’t have been so open.
This is definitely a tricky situation, creating strong reactions from both the celebrities involved and their fans. As the Harry Potter TV series films its first season, most people expect the conversations about the Wizarding World to continue for a long time.
The complete Harry Potter series is now available to stream on HBO Max, and that’s where you’ll also find the upcoming TV show based on the books. It remains to be seen if the ongoing issues between Emma Watson and J.K. Rowling will escalate further.
