‘I’ve Been Warming Up My Pottahs.’ Tom Felton Discusses What Excites Him Most About Playing Malfoy Again

Many fans who grew up with the Harry Potter books and movies wish they could experience the magic all over again. Now, for one devoted fan, that wish is coming true: Tom Felton, who famously played Draco Malfoy, is returning to the role in The Cursed Child on Broadway. He’s recently shared what he’s most looking forward to about revisiting such an iconic character.

I didn’t expect to ever see a classic Harry Potter actor return to their role, but it’s happening! If anyone was going to reprise their character, it feels right that it’s Tom Felton, who’s always been a big fan of the Wizarding World. He actually got quite emotional while getting ready to start in Cursed Child on November 11th, and in a clip posted to the show’s TikTok, he shared that he’s really excited about some of the lines he gets to say.

I think the blonde hair will be a fun look, and it’s great that I can use a wig. But I’m really looking forward to reciting some of the famous lines I used to say when I was a kid – I’ve been practicing my ‘Pottahs’ to get ready!

Everyone probably remembers Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy, and he’s not the only one thrilled to be voicing the character again. His performance is so well-known that it’s become closely tied to the role itself, and fans will likely be surprised to hear those famous lines delivered by him once more. Felton is especially looking forward to experiencing the immediate reaction from the audience when they hear him return as Malfoy.

What I’m most excited about is performing in front of a live audience. I’ve only ever experienced the Wizarding World through the finished films, so this is a completely different experience. I’m definitely a bit nervous, but it’s a good kind of nervous!

I don’t think Tom Felton has anything to worry about. He’s sure to draw a big crowd every night – his dedicated fans are just as eager to see him revisit his famous role as he is to play it again.

It makes you think – with fans so excited about Tom Felton returning to the world of Harry Potter on stage, might the show’s producers consider bringing in other actors from the films? Or could it even lead to a movie version of Cursed Child someday? For now, many of Felton’s former co-stars are showing their support for his Broadway debut, including Jason Isaacs, who played his father in the films.

It’s unlikely anyone will try to adapt Cursed Child like Felton did with stage productions. Chris Columbus, the original director of the Harry Potter films, has expressed interest in directing a movie version, but he doesn’t think it will happen. He believes this is due to the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling’s public statements and the political climate surrounding her views.

You can stream the Wizarding World franchise on HBO Max, with plans starting at $10.99 per month. This basic plan includes ads, but other options are available that unlock thousands of movies, shows, documentaries, and more. Check out the deals here.

I’m hoping the new HBO Harry Potter TV series includes some cameos from actors we already know and love. Johnny Flynn is playing Lucius Malfoy, which means Tom Felton won’t be able to reprise that role. But after his recent Broadway performance, I think Felton could definitely make an appearance in the show somehow.

I’m so excited for Tom Felton’s stage debut in ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’! To get fully prepared – and relive the magic – I’m planning to subscribe to HBO Max and watch all seven original ‘Harry Potter’ films beforehand. It’s the perfect way to build the anticipation!
