Be warned: the following contains spoilers for Episode 4 of Heated Rivalry! If you haven’t watched it yet, proceed with caution, or make sure you have an HBO Max subscription to stream the episode first.
I keep going back to a small moment from Episode 4 of Heated Rivalry. When Shane visited Ilya, Ilya offered him a ginger ale and made him a tuna melt, and it really stood out! It might seem silly to focus on this, but it’s actually a surprisingly important gesture. Let’s talk about why Ilya offering Shane that ginger ale meant so much.
Fans of Rachel Reid’s novels will remember the tuna melt and ginger ale scene – it’s a key moment for Shane and Ilya. It’s when Ilya first asks Shane to stay, and it signals a shift in their relationship, suggesting they might be ready to move beyond a casual connection and into something more serious.
Throughout the first few episodes of the 2025 TV series Heated Rivalry, Shane and Ilya have only had a physical connection. This steamy gay hockey romance follows the two athletes as they maintain a secret, years-long casual sexual relationship. But in Episode 4, things begin to change when Ilya asks Shane to stay, showing him just how much he cares.

Ilya shows his acceptance of Shane by simply offering him a ginger ale when making a tuna melt. It might seem small, but it’s significant because Shane rarely drinks alcohol and prefers to have ginger ale instead.
Shane and Ilya live in a world where drinking and partying are common, so Shane’s choice not to participate draws some attention. This is especially evident in Episode 4, where after Ilya offers Shane ginger ale, he’s met with confused or questioning looks when he asks for it again in two separate scenes.
Shane experienced a strange situation twice. First, during lunch with his parents, he asked for ginger ale but was offered wine instead. Later, at a bar, he requested the same drink and the bartender seemed confused, responding hesitantly. Shane quickly decided against it and ordered a beer.

HBO Max subscriptions begin at $10.99 per month. New episodes of Heated Rivalry are released on Fridays for viewers in the United States. You can also find popular shows like The White Lotus and The Pitt on this streaming service. Check out the deal here.
These scenes happen one right after another and really highlight how much Ilya cares for and accepts Shane. You might think it’s a small thing – just offering ginger ale – but Shane is often very careful about what he consumes and frequently faces judgment for it. So, for someone to simply accept him, provide something he needs, and not overthink it, is incredibly meaningful.
If my partner did something like that, knowing I don’t drink, it would really make me feel loved and appreciated. It’s a small thing, but it shows they truly listen and pay attention to what matters to me.
I’m really into that ginger ale moment, and I’m excited to see more heartwarming scenes as Heated Rivalry continues with its second season on HBO Max.
