I’ve always been impressed by how the coaches on The Voice stay connected with the singers after the show ends – like Blake Shelton hiring contestants for his Ole Red venues, Michael Bublé helping a winner with their album, or Kelsea Ballerini sharing her contact info. It makes you wonder how much one-on-one time the singers actually get with coaches like Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg. Now, thanks to a new EP, we have some insight into that relationship.
Season 28 of The Voice introduced a new twist to the Battle rounds: the singers themselves chose their duet partners, rather than the coaches. While this led to some surprising and fantastic pairings, it also made things more difficult for the coaches, including Niall Horan, who admitted the Battles were his least favorite part of the show. Just how much time did they have to prepare these arrangements? Executive producer Audrey Morrissey explained to SheKnows:
The coaching sessions take place over four days, and the actual battle performances take two days.
When coaches spend four days meeting individually with each team member, it suggests they’re having substantial one-on-one conversations. Afterwards, the participants seem to be able to contact their coaches via phone or email for additional guidance, as Morrissey explained.
I’ve noticed each coach has such a unique way of connecting with their artists – some are constantly texting, while others prefer email. It’s really interesting to see! As the competition heats up, I’ve also observed they communicate with the artists much more frequently behind the scenes. And honestly, a lot of what they talk about revolves around helping the artists pick the perfect songs – it’s clearly a huge part of their strategy.
The amount of contact between coaches and their team members seems to be controlled by the show, but Ariana Grande, who admitted to becoming very close to her artists, hinted in Season 21 that there are boundaries to how much they can communicate. She said she’d gone against her contract by constantly talking to her team and was told by producers that this wasn’t allowed.

The document didn’t specify any restrictions on involvement, but noted that coaches participated to different extents. Some enjoyed being heavily involved in all aspects of the performance, while others preferred to concentrate on the musical side.
Even artists who aren’t headliners are being recognized. Snoop Dogg recently praised the often-unseen team behind the scenes – the hair and makeup artists, wardrobe stylists, vocal coaches, and band members – who help artists succeed. He shared these thoughts with Access Hollywood last month, according to E! News.
The people who work behind the scenes rarely get the recognition they deserve. They’re the ones handling everything and making sure things run smoothly, while we simply get to perform. They make our jobs so much easier.
I’ve been watching The Voice for ages, and after 28 seasons, it feels like they’ve really got things figured out. It seems like the coaches have a pretty smooth experience, though I know it takes a huge team behind the scenes to make it all work. What I really appreciate is hearing that the coaches are genuinely involved with their singers – it’s good to know they’re not just showing up for the performances!
It’s been great watching the contestants connect, and I’m excited to see how the competition unfolds! Join us on NBC at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday, October 27th, as the Battle rounds conclude and the Knockouts begin. You can also watch the next day with a Peacock subscription.
