It’s Nice to See Donald Glover Be Silly Again

Donald Glover is showing off his playful side! After focusing on more dramatic projects like his shows Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Swarm, it’s been fun to see him be so charming and lighthearted while promoting The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. He’s always been funny – he was writing for 30 Rock when he was young – and he can still be a critically acclaimed artist while happily discussing the details of a Super Mario character. As the voice of Yoshi, Glover is part of a cast – including Charlie Day, Chris Pratt, and Jack Black – full of actors known for playing goofy characters, and he’s quickly become the most endearing of the bunch.

When he answered important Yoshi biology

According to the game’s lore, Yoshi is simply called a “Yoshi,” much like naming a baby “Human.” Donald Glover and podcast co-host Heather Anne Campbell jokingly discussed a peculiar detail about Yoshi’s design: his eyes appear to almost touch. Glover found the question hilariously absurd, musing on whether Yoshi has two eyes or one with a dividing crease, and ultimately concluded the eyes are so close together, it’s almost like they’re connected.

When he announced his Oscars campaign

In a recent Reuters interview, Donald Glover confidently predicted he’d likely receive an Oscar nomination for his work. He described the role as demanding a level of performance comparable to that of Daniel Day-Lewis. Glover is already well on his way to achieving EGOT status – having won Emmy, Grammy, and Tony awards – and an Oscar would complete the set. It was amusing to see some online commenters react to his statement, with one playfully warning him not to ‘Chalamet it’ – a reference to Timothée Chalamet’s perceived overhyped performances. Glover, however, is a trained dancer, making such a comparison unlikely.

When he got all the Yoshis together

It’s a fun combination of events: The Los Angeles Dodgers have a new player, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and they held a “Yoshi Night” promotion. Plus, actor Donald Glover had a movie he was promoting. On March 30th, Glover threw the first pitch, Yamamoto caught it, and the original Yoshi character was there to cheer them on.
