Itch.io Now Requires Creators To Disclose AI-Generated Content

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen the evolution of games from simple pixelated adventures to immersive virtual worlds. The integration of AI into this realm is indeed intriguing, but it also raises concerns about transparency and fair play.

Users and developers are grappling with the implementation of generative AI across various fields such as video games and TV show intros, and there’s a noticeable change in public opinion on this technology. In an effort to aid consumers in choosing which games to purchase, the online game marketplace Itch.io now mandates that creators disclose any use of generative AI in their games, according to a recent post by founder Leaf Corcoran on the platform’s forum.

The main content of the post is simple, focusing mainly on those who create things, asking them to share certain details openly.

Itch.io Now Requires Creators To Disclose AI-Generated Content

As an enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that we’ve added a new feature on the edit pages of our projects called ‘Generative AI Disclosure.’ This field is designed to help us understand if your project is the outcome of generative AI. If you confirm yes, we’ll further inquire about the specific types of generative AI used, such as Graphics, Sound, Text & Dialogue, and Code.

Essentially, Corcoran highlights that “Untagged generative AI assets (regardless of subsequent modifications) won’t qualify for display on the browse pages of [Itch.io].” In simpler terms, while the project won’t be deleted, it won’t appear during browsing and can only be found through search or a direct link.

As an enthusiast, I take care to avoid passing moral judgments on AI usage, recognizing its complexities. In the realm of Itch.io, the Content Creator Quality Guidelines clearly emphasize transparency in all game asset pages. This is primarily due to the legal uncertainties surrounding rights associated with content generated by AI.

With Itch’s action, numerous game creators and distributors are now making efforts to define their positions regarding this technology, such as Remedy, Microsoft, Netflix, among others.
