Italian police have discovered a dog being trained by its owner to dump trash. They caught the dog repeatedly carrying garbage and leaving it at a local trash pile.
Illegally dumping trash, known as fly-tipping, is a crime in Italy punishable by a large fine. However, one dog owner recently risked paying that fine just to avoid the hassle of proper disposal.
That’s what officials in Sicily say, after security cameras caught a small dog appearing to leave bags of trash at the side of the road.
Security cameras have captured the dog completing this task twice. Each time, it carried the bags to a trash pile on the street in the San Giorgio neighborhood of Catania, Sicily.
Authorities say dog owner trained pup to dump rubbish illegally
So, the city of Catania posted this video on Facebook, and they’re seriously upset. They’re saying someone used their dog to help them do something illegal, and they’re begging everyone to please keep the city clean. It’s pretty frustrating to see, honestly.
Just because someone is clever doesn’t excuse being rude or disrespectful. The evidence strongly suggests the animal was trained to stop people from recording its owner illegally dumping trash.
This behavior is both smart and seriously wrong. Not only does it make the city dirty, but it also unfairly uses an animal to get away with it. We all have a responsibility to keep our city clean and respect the environment.
So far, I haven’t seen anything about whether the dog’s owner got in trouble with the law, but everyone online is really talking about it now that the story is hitting English-language sites. It’s a total hot topic!
“He’s such a good boy,” one viewer said of the ordeal on TikTok.
“I’m sorry, that’s so funny,” another admitted.
“Are they going to charge the dog?” yet another joked.
In Italy, illegally dumping trash can result in significant fines, potentially reaching as high as €18,000 (around $21,000 USD) if the litter is thrown from a vehicle.
