The world of Naruto is full of unforgettable characters, and Itachi Uchiha is one of the most popular. For a long time, fans believed Itachi was a villain, and his actions deeply affected his brother, Sasuke. Driven by a desire for revenge and strength, Sasuke relentlessly trained to one day face Itachi and defeat him.
Itachi consistently challenged his brother Sasuke, hoping to push him to become stronger and achieve what Itachi himself couldn’t. He offered guidance and advice to many people throughout his life. Despite dying at just 21 years old, Itachi Uchiha lived a difficult life and wanted to spare others, particularly Sasuke, from experiencing the same hardships.
“Like I said earlier, appearances and preconception aren’t going to tell you anything. You assume that I’m very patient and underestimate me. The clan…the clan…You keep harping on it, mistaking the size of that vessel and underestimating the size of mine. That’s why you’re here now, groveling.”
Itachi Uchiha is a central character in the story of Naruto, heavily influencing the plot. He’s the driving force behind Sasuke’s desire for strength, and it’s eventually revealed he was responsible for the destruction of the Uchiha clan. Because of this, it’s fitting that he has a famous quote where he both criticizes the Uchiha and boasts about his own abilities. This quote highlights how Itachi sees himself as different and superior to the rest of his clan.
Although the quote sounds severe, Itachi didn’t harbor hatred for his clan. He felt he had no choice but to eliminate them because they were planning a rebellion. This quote also carries a powerful message about judging others. We often form opinions based on rumors or what we think we see, but those aren’t always accurate. In Itachi’s situation, people’s wrong assumptions ultimately led to their destruction.
“You will become a rival for me to measure my vessel against… you have that hidden potential. That is why I’m allowing you to live. For my sake.”
Before the full story was revealed, this moment was incredibly painful and shocking for viewers. After discovering his village destroyed, Sasuke comes face-to-face with his brother, Itachi, and can’t believe what he’s seeing. As Sasuke struggles to understand, Itachi explains he’s letting him live with one condition: that Sasuke will one day kill his best friend.
Itachi then advises Sasuke that if he wants to kill him, he needs to harbor resentment, hatred, and live a life hidden from the world. Itachi explains that he views Sasuke only as a means to measure his own power, due to their shared, special abilities. This manipulation plants a deep-seated hatred within Sasuke, shaping his character for much of the story.
“Madara is a bitter, defeated loser… He is not worthy of becoming the best among the Uchiha. I am the one…who shall surpass Madara and become the ultimate ninja!”
Itachi carefully warns Sasuke against becoming overconfident, but confidently declares he’ll become stronger than Madara. Even though Madara is still alive and actively causing trouble, Itachi believes he falls short of true greatness. This disappointment mirrors Itachi’s feelings about the Uchiha clan in the past. He considers Madara’s goals to be misguided and silly, rather than something to respect.
Itachi is incredibly skilled and shouldn’t be underestimated. While it’s likely he wouldn’t actually win against the more powerful Madara, he appears strong enough to pose a real threat. Ultimately, whether he could defeat Madara isn’t the point. This belief in his own abilities shows a lot about Itachi’s character, and it also subtly encourages Sasuke to trust in his own strength and not simply accept everything Madara says.
“You probably hate me, huh? It’s alright… It’s a fact that ninja go through life being hated. If you have power, you become alienated and also arrogant.”
Itachi faced immense pressure throughout his life, which intensified when the Uchiha Clan began planning a revolt against Konoha. Both the village leaders and his own father put him in a difficult position. His father specifically stated that Itachi was the clan’s main connection to the village’s inner workings, making him crucial to their scheme.
Itachi’s duties and responsibilities often prevented him from being with Sasuke. During a rare private moment, Itachi admitted Sasuke likely resented him. Before Sasuke could react, Itachi shared some insightful words that revealed his current situation. It felt like he was preparing Sasuke for a future betrayal, almost giving him permission to feel anger towards him.
“Sorry, Sasuke… This is the last time.”
Growing up, Sasuke looked up to his older brother, Itachi, and desperately wanted his attention. Itachi was incredibly talented, and Sasuke yearned to be trained by the brother he admired. However, Itachi was always occupied, and whenever Sasuke asked to hang out, Itachi would simply poke his forehead and promise to spend time with him later. It initially seemed like Itachi didn’t care, but fans eventually discovered that he was actually keeping his distance to keep Sasuke safe.
Itachi made a heartbreaking sacrifice to protect his brother, giving up time with the person he cherished most. During their final battle, Sasuke prepared for Itachi to kill him, but instead, Itachi held back, offering a loving, sincere smile. In a deeply emotional moment, he gently touched Sasuke’s forehead with a bloodied finger before dying. He had repeatedly postponed their final confrontation, and his death ensured he would never disappoint Sasuke again.
“You are weak. And you are weak because you don’t have enough hate.”
I watched as Sasuke and Itachi finally met again, years after the night their clan was destroyed. It quickly became clear Itachi was after Naruto, and Sasuke flew into a furious rage, launching attack after attack. But it wasn’t enough. Itachi was far stronger, and he easily overpowered Sasuke, leaving him badly beaten. What was even worse was what Itachi did next – he trapped Sasuke in a horrifying illusion, forcing him to repeatedly experience the trauma of watching his entire family die.
Itachi intentionally pushes Sasuke to his emotional limit, then tells him he lacks the necessary hatred to win. While Naruto, Kisame, and Jiraiya see this as cruel, Itachi is actually trying to inspire Sasuke. He believes fueling Sasuke’s anger is the only way to make him powerful enough to overcome the challenges ahead.
“Don’t cry, Sasuke. Your big brother is here to protect you, no matter what happens.”
At first, it was easy to dislike Itachi, but as the story unfolded, scenes with him became incredibly moving for viewers. When Obito attacked the Hidden Leaf Village with the Nine-Tailed Fox, Itachi was only five years old and his brother Sasuke was still a baby. While their parents fought to defend the village, Itachi was left responsible for protecting his infant brother.
Even though Itachi was incredibly gifted and about to graduate from the Ninja Academy, he was still just a child. Young ninja constantly face frightening situations, and they try their best to be brave. In this moment, Itachi is clearly scared, but he hides it to comfort his little brother. His promise to protect Sasuke shows how far he would go to keep him safe. It’s incredibly sad to realize that even when Itachi seemed like Sasuke’s enemy, he was still working to protect him.
“I have given you some of my powers. Though I hope that the day you will have to use them will never come.”
After hearing about Jiraiya’s death, Naruto remembered a secret conversation he’d had with Itachi while trapped in Itachi’s illusion (seen in episode 126, “Twilight”). He hadn’t told anyone about this meeting, and the full conversation wasn’t revealed to the audience until this moment. During that encounter, Itachi forced a crow into Naruto, claiming it was a transfer of some of his power, though he hoped Naruto would never need to use it.
The strange behavior only becomes clear during the Fourth Shinobi War. When Kabuto revived powerful deceased ninja, including Itachi, they were forced to battle their former allies. The crow that appeared around Naruto actually contained Shisui’s eye. Itachi used the crow and Shisui’s special ability, Kotoamatsukami, to break free from Kabuto’s control. Itachi originally planned for Naruto to use this technique if he couldn’t talk Sasuke out of seeking revenge. Although that didn’t happen, Itachi’s planning proved crucial, giving him time to stop Kabuto.
“We are human, not fish. No matter who you are, you do not truly know what kind of man you have become until you reach the very end. One realizes one’s true nature. Don’t you think that’s what death is about?
Itachi had a difficult life, and despite being young, he gained a lot of wisdom. Kisame recalled a conversation with Itachi after his death, where they discussed how people don’t truly understand themselves until they are facing death and looking back on their lives. Essentially, we don’t know who we are until the very end, when everything we’ve done is revealed.
What makes this memory so heartbreaking is that Kisame reflects on it while he’s dying. His final statement – that he wasn’t worthless – really adds to his complex character. It makes you think about how much his time working with Itachi in the Akatsuki changed him as a person.
“Each of us lives, dependent and bound by our individual knowledge and our awareness. All that is what we call “reality”. However, both knowledge and awareness are equivocal. One’s reality might be another’s illusion. We all live inside our own fantasies.”
The long-awaited fight between Itachi and Sasuke begins with Itachi surprisingly trying to talk to Sasuke. Sasuke is desperate to prove his strength and finally defeat the man he’s hated for years, unleashing all his most powerful attacks. At first, these attacks don’t seem to work, and Itachi uses illusions to disorient him. As the intense battle continues, Sasuke questions Itachi about someone else who also has the Sharingan ability.
Itachi remained calm even as Sasuke stabbed him, revealing the name Madara Uchiha. This infuriated Sasuke, who believed Madara was already dead and thought Itachi was simply taunting him. Itachi then explained the years of pain Sasuke had carried. Ultimately, Sasuke lived on, clinging to what he’d always been told was true.
