Episode 6 of It: Welcome to Derry really dug into Dick Halloran’s past, and honestly, it made his story even more heartbreaking than I initially thought. Right from the start, this series made it clear it wasn’t going to be just a lighthearted prequel to the It movies, or simply a collection of Easter eggs for Stephen King fans. It’s aiming for something much deeper.

Though It: Welcome to Derry includes many knowing references to Stephen King’s work, the show doesn’t shy away from darkness. It’s consistently brutal and grim, starting with the shocking deaths of seemingly safe characters in the very first episode and continuing with the harsh fate of Marge in episode four. Each new installment reliably increases the show’s intensity.

Episode 6, titled “In The Name of the Father,” continues the show’s trend of compelling storytelling. The episode mainly focuses on Lily’s investigation into her friend Ingrid, who is revealed to be Mrs. Kersh – a character from the It story. The kind nurse from Juniper Hills Asylum is actually working with Pennywise, believing the terrifying clown is her long-lost father.

Although learning about Ingrid Kersh’s past was the biggest surprise in “In The Name of the Father,” the most shocking scene happened right after. A group of heavily armed and violent white supremacists showed up at the Black Spot.

Earlier in the show, Will’s mother, Charlotte, admitted she’d secretly sheltered Ronnie’s father, Hank, at the Black Spot. She did this to protect him from being killed by an angry mob. Even though Hank hadn’t committed the crimes the town’s prejudiced residents accused him of, his relationship with a white woman meant he couldn’t prove he was somewhere else when the crimes happened.

Unfortunately for Hank, the woman he was having an affair with was Mrs. Kersh, a follower of the evil entity Pennywise from It: Welcome to Derry. She quickly told the sheriff where to find him. The sheriff then alerted a violent, racist group who rushed to the Black Spot, intent on attacking Hank.

Even though the story was heartbreaking for characters like Hank and his daughter Ronnie, the series also made the journey of another Stephen King character incredibly sad. Dick Halloran from The Shining has been a significant presence in season 1 of It: Welcome to Derry, primarily using his psychic abilities to assist the military in finding Pennywise.

Halloran’s abilities come with a significant drawback. Following his terrifying encounter with the killer clown in Neibolt House – as seen in It: Welcome to Derry – he struggles with constant visions of the deceased throughout the story “In The Name of the Father.” This causes him severe PTSD, putting a major strain on his relationship with Leroy.

It: Welcome to Derry’s Dick Halloran Plot Makes The Shining So Much Worse

Halloran tells Leroy that as a child, his grandmother taught him to use his psychic abilities to trap frightening ghosts. He stored these encounters in a hidden part of his mind, like a locked box. However, in the fifth episode, “29 Neibolt Street,” Pennywise happily unlocked that box and released everything inside.

Leroy doesn’t realize the danger Dick is facing is truly supernatural, so he keeps suggesting Dick try to reason with the monsters inside his head and defeat Pennywise. But Dick is deeply shaken by the constant visions of the dead and can only cope by drinking heavily.

Knowing that Dick Halloran overcomes the horrors of It: Welcome to Derry just to be unexpectedly killed decades later in The Shining makes his death even more tragic. What was already a shocking moment now feels truly heartbreaking thanks to the It prequel.

It: Welcome to Derry’s Black Spot Plot Makes Dick Halloran’s Story Tragic

Knowing Dick Halloran is destined to survive the events in It: Welcome to Derry actually makes his death more tragic. He’s supposed to live through that season because, according to established story details, he’s later killed by Jack Torrance for no clear reason. This creates a painful irony.

I’m a big Stephen King fan, and while It: Welcome to Derry does a lot to build out the connections between his stories, I don’t think it’s going to change any of the major plot points we already know. What really struck me was seeing how Dick’s struggles with his psychic ability – his ‘shine’ – led him to get completely wasted before he even got to the Black Spot. It totally explains why he was so unprepared when that militia showed up!

Dick Hallorann possesses a limited form of psychic ability, letting him sense danger before it occurs. This is demonstrated in The Shining, where he forewarns Danny about the dangers his father will face at the Overlook Hotel during the winter. Because of this ability, Dick might have predicted the tragic events that ultimately unfold.

Because Dick was practically unconscious, he didn’t realize the danger posed by the racist group. This likely left the character from Stephen King’s It: Welcome to Derry feeling guilty for the rest of his life about how the sixth episode ended.
