‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Releases Creepy Opening Credits, Early Ep. 2 Drop

The show It: Welcome to Derry now features a truly unsettling opening credits sequence. Set to the upbeat tune of ‘A Smile and A Ribbon’ by Patience and Prudence, the animated intro initially shows a cheerful view of life in Maine, but quickly reveals hidden and increasingly disturbing imagery.

The scene begins with a family enjoying a picnic on the grass. The camera then focuses on a young girl beside her bike, looking curiously down into a shadowy storm drain. While the image evokes memories of Pennywise the Clown and the phrase “we all float down here,” there’s no immediate danger visible.

You know, there’s something about a simple smile and a pretty ribbon that just feels… magical. That’s what this song, ‘A Smile and a Ribbon’ by Patience and Prudence, always reminded me of. It’s about deciding to be your best, most unique self – embracing a little bit of special and rare. I always connected with the idea that the more you genuinely show happiness, the more real it becomes, and honestly, the bigger your smile, the smaller your problems seem. It’s a really sweet, uplifting tune, and it always puts me in a good mood – kind of like a little cinematic pick-me-up!

As the movie ended and the credits rolled, it started showing what looked like everyday scenes of small-town life. But then things got weird. These normal moments were mixed with images of tentacled monsters handing out candy, disturbing scenes of lobotomies, shadowy figures watching with glowing eyes, and even suggestions of a looming nuclear war. It was a really unsettling contrast, and left me totally creeped out!

‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Brings Touristy Vibe to Opening Credits

According to The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Andy Muschietti said the opening sequence of the show was inspired by a desire to create a “touristic” feel, similar to the Welcome to Derry title, and he wanted to carry that vibe into the credits.

Derry presents a perfect, almost fake, exterior – a town that looks good on the surface but hides something terrifying underneath. This mirrors our fascination with dramatic events, all building towards the devastating fire at the Ironworks.

Aaron Becker, a director at Filmograph – the team behind the chilling opening sequence – explained that their choice of the song “A Smile and A Ribbon” was crucial in tying everything together.

Honestly, the song really threw me at first. But then it clicked – it perfectly captures what these characters are going through as they grow up. It’s like they’re desperately trying to pretend everything’s okay, even when they’re totally terrified, and the song really reflects that internal struggle.

Welcome to Derry premiered on HBO Max on Sunday, Oct. 26. The highly-anticipated follow-up episode was released early on Friday, Oct. 31, just in time for Halloween. The show, which serves as a prequel series to Stephen King’s classic horror novel IT, is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 78% score from film and television critics and an 80% from the general audience. While it received some criticism for the pacing and use of CGI, it was praised for its genuinely terrifying moments and impressive production design. Matt Roush of TV Insider teased Welcome to Derry would be the “it” show of the season for horror fans who “can’t get enough of this sort of gleefully gory monster mash.”
