The fifth episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry‘ gave horror fans the Pennywise scares they were waiting for, and also unveiled a surprising secret about one of the most frightening creatures in the films. Be warned: spoilers follow!
The new horror series has been building suspense with Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise in a similar way to the shark in Jaws – he’s been hidden, waiting for the perfect moment to attack. That moment came in the fifth episode, when Lily and her friends bravely searched for him in the town’s sewers.
Everyone discovered the key to defeating Pennywise: fragments of the meteorite that brought him to Earth. Lily managed to grab a piece from the water just before he attacked, revealing its power.
Although Pennywise was the main focus, the fifth episode of It: Welcome to Derry also unveiled a surprising detail about one of the scariest forms the villain takes in Andy Muschietti’s IT films.
Lily is friends with Mrs Kersh from It: Chapter Two

Lily is friends with Mrs. Ingrid Kersh, played by Madeline Stowe, who is also the unsettling elderly woman who attacks Bev Marsh in It: Chapter Two. To quickly recap, this character has a decaying chest and abnormally long limbs, and she chases Bev inside the apartment where her father once lived.
The show hinted at the elderly woman’s identity in Episode 2, showing her at the butcher shop owned by her husband, Stan Kersh. Episode 5 then confirmed she is indeed Stan’s wife, and this relationship now appears to be a significant part of the story in Welcome to Derry.
The latest episode showed Hank Grogan (Stephen Rider) is secretly having an affair with Mrs. Kersh. This revelation feels logical, considering Stan often treats his wife more like an employee than an equal partner.
Hank was with Mrs. Kersh when the terrible killings happened at the theater, which is why he couldn’t explain where he was. It’s obvious that people in Derry in the 1960s were deeply prejudiced, and he likely feared for his life if he told the truth.
Warner Bros. and HBO could have easily created a straightforward story about Pennywise’s beginnings, but they’ve done much more. The show, thanks to Muschietti and the writers, includes detailed backstories even for the terrifying hallucinations Pennywise creates, adding a lot of depth.
I’m really curious to see how Mrs. Kersh changes throughout the story. It’s going to be unsettling to watch her go from being a friend to Lily, to becoming this terrifying, decaying figure who pursues Bev… I can’t wait to see how that transformation unfolds!
