The third episode of “It: Welcome to Derry” strongly suggests that Bill Skarsgård will soon appear as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The HBO series continues to delve into Derry’s troubled past and how the evil that haunts the town first began.
Does Pennywise appear in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3?
The third episode of “Welcome to Derry,” called “Now You See It,” leaves viewers with a shocking cliffhanger. After a séance in a cemetery goes awry, Will Hanlon becomes trapped inside a crypt. He manages to take a picture of a shadowy figure, and when the photo develops, the figure has glowing eyes and the distinct shape of a clown. Will immediately confirms his terrifying discovery, exclaiming, “It’s a clown.”
Brad Caleb Kane and Jason Fuchs, the showrunners, have addressed the question of whether the figure at the end of episode 103 is Pennywise. Kane initially stated they weren’t certain, but then confirmed, “It’s absolutely Pennywise.” He wants viewers to believe that’s who it is when they watch.
It’s unclear if the filmmakers have made a final decision, but everything points to Bill Skarsgård’s clown making an appearance soon.
What happens in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3 ending?
This episode ties together several plot threads, hinting at a major revelation. It opens with a scene from the past, showing a young Francis Shaw – who later becomes General Shaw – having a frightening encounter with a strange, toothed creature in the woods. This event seems connected to the mysterious curse affecting the town of Derry.
I’ve been following the story of Dick Hallorann, a psychic who’s been working with the military. He’s trying to use his abilities to find something… unusual, hidden under our town. Recently, he had a really intense vision – he described being in a flooded sewer, and right there, he saw this old circus wagon with ‘Pennywise the Dancing Clown’ painted on it. Then, he said he heard a voice, just asking, ‘Who are you?’ It really shook him up and brought him back to the present. It’s all pretty unsettling, to be honest.
Lilly, Ronnie, Will, and Rich, a new group of friends, attempt to photograph the frightening presence that’s been following them. Their attempt at a ritual in the cemetery doesn’t go as planned, and ghostly figures appear. Will’s camera manages to capture the most compelling proof yet of the evil lurking in Derry. According to co-creator Jason Fuchs, the decision to hold off on fully showing Pennywise was intentional. He stated they wanted to recapture the character’s original scariness, as Pennywise is now widely loved.
At the end of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Episode 3, Hallorann cautions that they’ve been noticed, and the kids understand the threat is growing more serious. The episode concludes with a glimpse of the clown, seen as a blurry figure in a photograph – a detail foreshadowed earlier in the story.
