With the release of the trailer for the second part of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’, fans are buzzing – and a shocking theory about the events at the theater is gaining traction. Be warned: this article contains major spoilers!
The season kicked off with a thrilling first episode, packed with frightening jump scares, nods to DC Comics, and a shocking cliffhanger. The story is set 27 years before the events of the first IT film directed by Andy Muschietti, and focuses on when Pennywise (played by Bill Skarsgard) began terrorizing children in the town of Derry.
Wow, that episode ending was brutal! Seeing Teddy get torn apart by that demonic bat baby, and then the Malkin kids… it was just a total bloodbath. It really drove home the point that anyone could die in this series, and no one is safe. It’s a scary thought, but I guess Muschietti wants us to know all bets are off – though thankfully, it looks like Dick Hallorann from The Shining is still protected!
The new trailer for ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Episode 2 has sparked theories among fans that the events at the theater weren’t what they appeared to be.
Fans think It: Welcome to Derry Episode 2 will reveal the theater massacre was a hallucination
Fans of the ‘It’ miniseries are speculating that the second episode of ‘Welcome to Derry’ will show the theater tragedy never actually happened. Instead, they believe it was another illusion created by Pennywise to torment the children.
A popular theory, originating from a BrainPilot video on YouTube, proposes that the events of the theater massacre weren’t real. The theory focuses on a line spoken by Lilly (Clara Stack) in the Episode 2 trailer – “No one’s gonna believe me” – combined with scenes of her waking up, suggesting the entire event was a nightmare and the children are still alive.
If the second episode of ‘Welcome to Derry’ doesn’t fully address the shocking and sad murders from the first, many viewers will likely be let down, as those events had a strong impact. However, the director has stated he wants to keep the audience guessing, so it’s possible there will be a surprising new development in this episode.

He explained to The Hollywood Reporter that the goal was to create an event that would immediately establish a feeling of unpredictability – that any character, even young ones, could die at any time. This was done to show viewers that no one in this world is safe, and anything can happen.
