It Takes Two Boss Says Studio Will Never Make A Live-Service Game

According to Josef Fares, the creative mind behind It Takes Two and the forthcoming Split Fiction project, Hazelight Studios has no plans to develop a live-action game.

In that interview with Eurogamer, Fares expressed his stance by saying, “We won’t adopt them because I don’t support them. To me, relying on live services isn’t the best approach. I hope more developers will concentrate on their passions and convictions instead.

Fares clarified his viewpoint that creating live-service games involves significant financial strain, yet he underscored the importance of maintaining a strong emphasis on creativity. He advocates for striking a balance between fiscal responsibility and creative freedom, as developers cannot expect unlimited funds to simply pursue their whims.

He underscored the massive following Hazelight has garnered as proof that sticking to your creative instincts can indeed attract a substantial fanbase. Last year, it was disclosed that It Takes Two had surpassed sales of 20 million units.

Other production studios have recently jumped on the bandwagon of live-service models, with varying outcomes. Sony began its journey into live services some years back. While Helldivers 2 met expectations, games such as Concord struggled to gain traction, and several projects have been scrapped, including Naughty Dog’s multiplayer version of The Last of Us and rumors of a God of War live-service spinoff.

Joe Tung, a seasoned member of Bungie’s team, expressed his preference for the live-service model over the conventional $60 box approach, as it encourages developers to prioritize long-term player satisfaction. In a recent financial discussion, Ubisoft announced its commitment to expanding both live-service games and open-world action-adventure titles.

Fares has lately shared his ideas concerning AI’s impact on the gaming sector, emphasizing the importance of mastering collaboration with AI and other cutting-edge tech solutions.

In 2021, Hazelight Studios’ title, It Takes Two, was crowned Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Now, their upcoming game, Split Fiction, is set for release on March 6th on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Similar to Hazelight’s previous works, Split Fiction is a cooperative adventure game that focuses on two characters, Zoe and Mio, as they navigate through levels blending fantasy and sci-fi themes in an effort to survive.
