It Looks The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Story Is Combining 4 Different Games

It appears the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel won’t just be based on Super Mario Galaxy. While Super Mario Galaxy will play a role, the story seems to be drawing inspiration from at least four different Mario games, using Galaxy as just one part of its foundation.

The new Mario movie seems to be hinting at a space adventure inspired by the popular Super Mario Galaxy game from 2007. While the trailer introduced Rosalina and showed some cosmic settings, it hasn’t been obvious how much of the game’s story will actually be included.

Surprisingly, the latest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie suggests the film isn’t based heavily on that specific game. Instead, it seems to draw more inspiration from other Super Mario games.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Appears To Be Combining Four Different Games

The first trailer suggests Princess Peach’s adventure will be similar to Super Mario Galaxy. However, Mario and Luigi’s gameplay looks more like Super Mario Odyssey, a 2017 game where Mario travels to 14 unique worlds to rescue Princess Peach.

Mario and Luigi will likely discover Yoshi’s egg in the Sand Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey. Later, they’ll fight a Tyrannosaurus Rex that comes from the game’s Cascade Kingdom.

The new film seems to be taking inspiration from the various locations in The Odyssey, and one of those places might be based on Subcon, the world from Super Mario Bros. 2. The trailer showed Princess Peach in a casino that looks just like the bonus levels from that game, and featured three characters from Super Mario Bros. 2: Mouser, Birdo, and Clawgrip.

The trailer also features a fun throwback to the game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island with the appearance of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi alongside Yoshi and Toad as they face off against a T-Rex. This is a nod to the original game, which centered around Yoshi’s quest to keep Baby Mario safe.

Even though the story takes place in the past, it could still be a quick break from the main adventure. We might see Mario and Luigi turned back into babies, forcing Yoshi to step up and take charge. While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might just include this as a small hidden reference, it’s currently unclear if that will happen.
