Isabelle Fuhrman, Ben Hardy, Scoot McNairy to Lead Dystopian Thriller ‘Die by Night,’ Protagonist Launching in Berlin (EXCLUSIVE)

Actors Isabelle Fuhrman, Ben Hardy, and Scoot McNairy have been announced as the main cast members for the upcoming dystopian survival-thriller movie titled “Die by Night.

Prior to the upcoming European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin, Protagonist Pictures is introducing a new feature they’re working on. For international distribution, Protagonist Pictures will be in charge, while UTA Independent Film Group takes care of North American rights.

Die by Night” is a film crafted by Emmy-nominated director Rod Blackhurst (“Blood for Dust,” “Night Swim,” “Amanda Knox”), who co-wrote the screenplay with J. Hunter Richardson based on their prequel script, titled “The Chosen Few.”

In this version, the focus is on the creative process and the collaboration between Blackhurst and Richardson in bringing the story to life. The use of “co-written” and “based on their prequel script” emphasizes their joint effort and contribution to the project.

The narrative unfolds in a world devastated by an apocalypse, where prolonged periods of ‘Night’ bring disorder. Creatures called The Horde roam during these dark hours, preying on their victims. Lucia (Fuhrman), a runaway, and Barry (Hardy), who is injured but determined, embark on a journey to reach The Wall, a sanctuary. However, The Horde aren’t the only danger; there are also the Clans, tribes of people who survive and thrive by selling and trading humans, increasing their power in numbers. According to the movie’s synopsis: “In this action-packed thriller spanning a single night, the key to survival is trusting each other and staying in the light until they reach The Wall.

The film ‘Die by Night’ is brought to you by Witchcraft Motion Picture Company’s Noah Lang, who has worked on ‘Blood for Dust’ and ‘Sleeping Dogs’, as well as Story in the Sky’s Ben Shields Catlin, known for ‘Sam & Kate’ and ‘Stealing Pulp Fiction’. The executive producers are Dave Bishop and George Hamilton of Protagonist Pictures.

Blackhurst stated, “This movie emerged from the fears and apprehensions I felt as a new father, my strong urge to safeguard my daughter against the malevolent forces in the world – from harmful ideologies that empower the self-righteous, and the tough decisions we’re compelled to make amidst chaos.” We are thrilled to collaborate with Protagonist, whose reputation for quality and discernment is well-known; they create films that resonate with me and quickly grasped the dual nature of ‘Die by Night’, seeing it as both a wild genre piece and a reflection of our times, albeit presented in an imaginative manner.

The character designs for this movie are primarily overseen by Vincent Proce, a multiple Emmy Award-winning concept artist, who’s renowned for his contributions to hit productions such as “It Chapter 2” and the entire “Smile” film series.

Bishop stated that “Die by Night” is expected to be a suspenseful, fast-paced thriller filled with constant shocking moments. He describes Rod’s vision of a grim, post-apocalyptic world as dark and devastated, populated by horrifying creatures designed by the best minds in the industry, promising an intense viewing experience that will grip the audience from start to finish without letting go until the end credits play.

Shields Catlin and Lang expressed that ‘Die by Night’ feels like a movie they longed to watch at their local cinema as children, pleading with their older siblings to find a way in – raw, intense, unyielding, and terrifying. It’s the kind of film we might not be ready to share with our own kids just yet, but eagerly anticipate the day when they are old enough to appreciate it alongside us.
