Isabella Rossellini Remembers David Lynch: ‘I Loved Him So Much’

Isabella Rossellini has paid tribute to the late David Lynch, who died on Thursday at 78.

As a movie critic, I found myself reminiscing over a poignant moment from my past this weekend. Reflecting back on 1986, I shared an old photograph of myself and the remarkable director David Lynch, who catapulted me to stardom with his film “Blue Velvet”. Accompanying the image was a heartfelt message: “I held such deep affection for him. Thank you for your thoughtful words.

Apart from “Blue Velvet,” Rossellini was also featured in David Lynch’s 1990 movie, “Wild at Heart.” Notably, this film received the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival, as shown in the picture above.

Rossellini and Lynch crossed paths during the audition phase for “Blue Velvet.” It’s been passed down that Lynch remarked to Rossellini, “Funny thing, you seem like Ingrid Bergman’s daughter,” oblivious to the fact that she was indeed. Eventually, she landed the role of Dorothy Vallens, a nightclub singer whose child and spouse were abducted by a criminal in exchange for lewd acts. The movie garnered Lynch a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director.

They made their relationship known following the divorces from their respective partners. Lynch had parted ways with his second wife Mary Fisk, while Rossellini was previously married to Jonathan Wiedemann. In 1990, at the Cannes Film Festival, both of them appeared together to promote the movie “Wild at Heart.” In this film, Rossellini portrayed Perdita Durango, a character who had a past connection with Sailor (Nicolas Cage).
