Is Zack Snyder returning to continue the Snyderverse? DC rumors explained

Rumors are circulating that Zack Snyder might return to direct more films in the DC Universe, potentially after Warner Bros. is sold. Here’s a breakdown of what’s being said about these DC rumors.

Warner Bros. is now for sale, and as of November 24, 2025, companies like Paramount, Comcast, and Netflix have made offers to buy it. There’s also been talk of interest from investment groups in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. Fans of DC Comics are especially curious about how this sale will affect the future of James Gunn’s DC Universe, which has recently gained momentum with shows like ‘Superman’ and the second season of ‘Peacemaker’.

In October, there were reports that James Gunn might lose his job as co-head of DC Studios, but so far, that hasn’t happened and he’s still working there. However, with Warner Bros. potentially being sold, many fans are still wondering if new ownership will lead to Gunn being removed from his position at DC.

A recent report suggests a possible new owner might revive Zack Snyder’s vision for the Justice League, bringing back Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, and the rest of the original team. Here are the details.

Zack Snyder is not officially resurrecting the Snyderverse

Currently, Zack Snyder isn’t planning to continue his vision for the DC Universe—often called the SnyderVerse—with the original cast at Warner Bros. But according to Cosmic Book News, if the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia buys Warner Bros., they may decide to revive the SnyderVerse and fully support Snyder’s involvement.

According to reports, Saudi Arabian investors are aiming to create a blockbuster franchise that can compete with Marvel’s biggest hits, like the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

CBN initially reported, based on anonymous sources, that James Gunn would be removed as co-chairman of DC Studios. However, a later report from the same publication indicated that the new Saudi Arabian owners want to continue with both existing DC Universe plans and avoid making any disruptive changes.

It’s doubtful Warner Bros. would allow two separate superhero universes to coexist in theaters simultaneously. While it’s acceptable to have standalone films like Matt Reeves’ The Batman as independent stories, creating a whole separate team of heroes alongside James Gunn’s new universe would likely confuse audiences and weaken the brand.

Warner Bros. hasn’t shared any updates about the ‘Snyderverse’ since 2021. At that time, the company’s then-CEO, Ann Sarnoff, explained to Variety that while they were pleased to release Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League, it marked the end of his planned story arc.

It appears Warner Bros. is being sold, but it’s very unlikely the new owners will undo the fresh start James Gunn created, especially considering the success of the new Superman movie, which has earned over $616.7 million globally.

It’s important to remember that these reports haven’t been confirmed by Warner Bros., Zack Snyder, or the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. When contacted, Zack Snyder’s representatives didn’t respond to requests for confirmation.

Ben Affleck isn’t keen to play Batman again, but he’s not saying no either

A recent report suggested Ben Affleck could reprise his role as Batman, joining Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman. However, the report didn’t cite any sources or offer proof to support this claim.

As a DC fan, I remember when Ben Affleck was going to make his own Batman movie – he was going to direct and star! But that project ended up evolving into the Robert Pattinson Batman film, and it looks like that version of Gotham won’t be part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe. It’s a bit sad, honestly, but exciting to see what Gunn has planned!

In an April 2025 interview with GQ, Ben Affleck said he doesn’t plan to return to superhero films. He explained it wasn’t due to any negative experiences, but simply that he’s no longer passionate about the genre.

In the same interview, he explained he stopped playing Batman because of personal difficulties he was facing.

I definitely made mistakes during that time, and I take responsibility for them. A big part of why things were difficult for me was that I was dealing with a lot of personal unhappiness and brought that negativity to work each day.

Fans were surprised by a brief response he gave on the red carpet at the premiere of The Accountant 2. When reporter Alyssa Brook Lee asked if he might return for future projects, he simply said, “Anything is possible.”

Let’s not jump to conclusions – that answer was a fast reaction to the question, and he said it right before walking away. It’s just as likely that Affleck was simply being courteous and didn’t want to seem rude to someone who approached him at an event.

While this statement is more optimistic than what he’s said before, it’s best not to overinterpret it. We reached out to Ben Affleck’s representatives for a response, but haven’t heard back yet.

With the sale of Warner Bros. still happening and no official word on the future of DC Studios, it’s smarter to concentrate on the projects already confirmed to be in the works. Luckily, there are some exciting ones coming up, like the Supergirl movie, the Man of Tomorrow project, and the Lanterns TV series.
