I was a little bummed to hear Mayor of Kingstown is ending after season 5, and it felt like maybe Taylor Sheridan’s incredible run on TV was over. But honestly, I wouldn’t count him out for a second! He’s become a huge name, right up there with people like Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes – one of those showrunners everyone knows and respects.

Most TV viewers have probably heard of the popular Yellowstone series, its prequels 1883 and 1923, or other shows created by Taylor Sheridan like Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown. Even though Yellowstone finished airing in December 2024, Taylor Sheridan remains a dominant force in television.

I was really surprised to hear that Mayor of Kingstown is ending after its fifth season. It’s a tough loss, especially considering how consistently great Taylor Sheridan’s work has been. The final season is going to be short – just eight episodes – and honestly, it feels like a bit of a stumble after his recent run of success. From where I’m sitting, it’s starting to look like maybe, just maybe, Sheridan’s winning streak is coming to an end.

It’s disappointing to learn that season 5 will be the end of Mayor of Kingstown, and that it will be a shortened season with only eight episodes. This is particularly surprising given that the show, starring Jeremy Renner, had recently received its best reviews. Mayor of Kingstown actually started with very poor reviews, with its first season receiving some of the worst criticism of Taylor Sheridan’s career.

I have to say, Mayor of Kingstown really won me over! It started a little slow, but by season four, everyone was talking about how good it was – the reviews were fantastic. The show centers around Jeremy Renner’s character, Mike McLusky, and he’s this fascinating guy who tries to keep the peace between all the gangs in town while also running a private prison. It’s a really unique and gripping story.

McLusky is a typical Sheridan character – a flawed hero who bends the rules to maintain order in the violent city he lives in. Mayor of Kingstown also offers sharp observations about society, showing how the prison system can actually encourage corruption and worsen crime.

With strong viewership and positive reviews in recent seasons, the cancellation of Mayor of Kingstown is a significant setback for Taylor Sheridan’s television projects. Combined with the planned endings of Yellowstone later in 2024 and its prequel, 1923, in early 2025, it appears Sheridan is winding down his involvement in television production.

Despite recent developments, it’s probably too early to say that Taylor Sheridan’s career is over. While Yellowstone finished over a year ago and 1923 concluded in 2025, his contract with Paramount is ending soon. This could mean less creative freedom and control in his future projects and where they appear.

Despite recent changes, Sheridan’s future in television looks promising. His show, Tulsa King, continues to be very popular on Paramount and doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon. Plus, the Yellowstone universe is still thriving and is about to grow with a new type of show.

Y: Marshals Signals A Whole New Era For Taylor Sheridan’s TV Empire

Taylor Sheridan’s new show, Y: Marshals, premieres on CBS in March. Interestingly, it’s connected to his hit series Yellowstone – it’s a spinoff focusing on the character Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) and his past in the military. While a continuation of the Yellowstone story, Y: Marshals will be shown on traditional network television instead of streaming.

I’m really excited for the new show, which is set to debut on Sunday, March 1st, 2026, as a mid-season addition to CBS’s lineup. It’s got the potential to kick off a whole wave of Western-themed spinoffs, building on the popularity of the original series. And honestly, even though shows like Lioness didn’t quite hit the mark and the first season of Mayor of Kingstown got some harsh criticism, it hasn’t slowed down the creator’s momentum at all – which is pretty impressive!

Sheridan’s TV Empire Relies On His Post-Paramount Projects

With Y: Marshals, Taylor Sheridan might demonstrate that both he and his Yellowstone universe still have a lot of potential. The success of his shows ultimately depends less on where they air and more on whether audiences continue to enjoy his unique style of storytelling.

Taylor Sheridan has already achieved remarkable success with one streaming platform, similar to Mike Flanagan’s work at Netflix, but moving to a new studio doesn’t guarantee the same results. It remains to be seen if both of these talented creators can continue their winning streak in their new roles, though there’s good reason to believe they will.

I’m still processing the fact that Mayor of Kingstown season 5 might be the last we see of this story, but knowing Taylor Sheridan, I’m sure he’s already got something else amazing in the works. So, even though the ending felt a bit sudden, I wouldn’t count him out – he always delivers!
