Is Star Trek Online shutting down? The real status and future of STO in 2025

In an era where live-service games often have a short lifespan, it’s understandable for Star Trek Online players to express concerns about the game eventually being discontinued. For instance, Star Wars Hunters and MultiVersus were recent releases that ended prematurely within a year and after its fifth season respectively. Even Concord, a new game, was pulled from service just two weeks after its launch. This pattern has led even long-time MMO enthusiasts to question the longevity of their beloved classic games.

Will Star Trek Online shut down?

This year, “Star Trek Online” marked its 15th anniversary. Although the player count on Steam isn’t particularly high, there are roughly 1,500 players logging in concurrently almost daily. Therefore, fear not, fans of “STO,” as it appears this game is here to stay for quite some time.

Fresh developments continue to emerge, with new episodes and events appearing several times a year. The most significant update was in February, but it’s now September, and that pace is not uncommon. Last year also saw only a few major updates. However, there’s always an influx of returning players eager to explore the latest content.

One reason fans of STO might be feeling a bit uneasy is due to the shift in game management from Cryptic Studios to DECA Games. This transition began in 2024, with some staff from Cryptic moving over to help ensure a smooth process and continuity for the game. Despite this change, Cryptic continues to work under DECA, focusing on live operations and backend tasks. DECA, situated in Berlin, is recognized for taking over and running older free-to-play games, while Arc Games, a division of the Embracer Group, remains responsible for distribution and monetization.

In July 2025, DECA hosted a live broadcast to present themselves and discuss the future of STO (Star Trek Online). While they didn’t disclose much information, their primary aim was to assure players that the game is being well-managed and further advancements are underway.
