The new Spider-Man show on Prime Video is coming out soon, and fans are wondering if the Spider-Noir character will be part of the larger Spider-Verse storyline.
Nicolas Cage, known for voicing Spider-Man in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is now portraying the character in a live-action TV series. Viewers will have the option to watch Spider-Noir in either color or classic black-and-white. This show marks the first live-action Spider-Man television series in decades and expands on the story of the Academy Award-winning animated movie.
In Spider-Noir, Nicolas Cage stars as a tough detective who secretly operates as a masked hero called “The Spider.” He’s investigating a dangerous plot connected to New York gangster Silvermane, played by Brendan Gleeson.
Since Nicolas Cage originally played Spider-Noir in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, you might expect the new live-action series to be connected. However, the relationship between the two isn’t straightforward.
Is Spider-Noir connected to the Spider-Verse?
Although the show is connected to the Spider-Verse movies, Mahershala Ali isn’t playing the Spider-Noir character viewers remember from those films. The previous version was an alternate Peter Parker from a 1930s, black-and-white New York. In this series, Ali plays a detective named Ben Reilly instead.
This storyline references the comics from the 1990s where Marvel created a copy of Spider-Man named Ben Reilly. This sparked a major story arc, called the Clone Saga, that questioned which Peter Parker was the original. Eventually, Ben Reilly established his own identity and became the hero known as the Scarlet Spider.
Producer Phil Lord shared with Esquire that the show will reveal the story behind why Nicolas Cage’s character is called Reilly instead of Parker. He playfully hinted at the explanation, while his partner Chris Miller confirmed that the reason for the name ‘Ben Reilly’ will be addressed in the series, but stopped short of revealing details.
Nicolas Cage’s performance in ‘SPIDER-NOIR’ is described as someone pretending to be human, but fundamentally acting like an animal. Producer Phil Lord explains that Cage is portraying a character who feels like an animal on the inside, essentially ‘code-switching’ between human and animal behavior. (Source: Esquire)

It doesn’t seem likely the show will use clones in its 1930s New York setting, but it might explore a link between the main character and a Peter Parker from another universe.
Because the Spider-Verse involves multiple universes, Spider-Noir is linked to the movies in the same way as all the other Spider-People. However, the TV show seems to exist on its own, at least for the time being.
