Is Pierce Brosnan Teasing DCEU’s Doctor Fate In Superman Sequel Man Of Tomorrow? I Need James Gunn To Weigh In

The future of DC superhero movies includes many popular characters from the comics, like Milly Alcock as Supergirl and a new team-up featuring the Boy Wonder. While John Cena’s Peacemaker was expected to be one of the only returning characters as James Gunn reboots the DC Universe, it now seems Pierce Brosnan might also be involved.

Pierce Brosnan, known for playing James Bond, first appeared as the comic book character Doctor Fate in the 2022 film Black Adam. While the movie earned over $400 million worldwide, it wasn’t considered a success. Even though his character’s story seemed to end in that film, Brosnan has expressed interest in reprising the role. He’s now mentioned it again, suggesting he could return in James Gunn’s upcoming movie, Man of Tomorrow. It’s an unexpected possibility!

In an interview with GQ, Pierce Brosnan was asked if his experience with the poorly received film Black Adam made him want to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Brosnan dismissed the idea, suggesting he might not be finished playing Doctor Fate, and stated:

You know, I’m not one to go seeking things out. I definitely don’t go chasing after actors or directors! They know how to reach me if they want. I’ve been hearing some interesting rumors lately – apparently, Dr. Fate might be getting his own series or movie, which would be amazing. And I also heard he could be popping up in the next Superman film, which I’m really excited about!

It’s time to consider how much weight to give to what Pierce Brosnan said about Doctor Fate. We don’t know where the idea came from that Doctor Fate could lead his own show or movie, or even appear in a new Superman film. While it’s tempting to believe him, I’m hopeful that his version of Doctor Kent Nelson is the one we’ll see in future DC Universe projects.

Honestly, a little part of me wonders if Brosnan is just talking about stuff from a few years back. You know, when Dwayne Johnson was really pushing to be a major player in the DC universe, before James Gunn and Peter Safran came in and changed everything. He seemed so confident back then, but things have definitely shifted for him since then, and I think Brosnan might be referencing that older, more optimistic version of The Rock.

I completely understand why former Warner Bros. executives might have encouraged Pierce Brosnan with optimistic talk about his future with the company. However, since James Gunn hasn’t commented on either Brosnan or the character Doctor Fate, it’s unclear how likely a return actually is. What’s certain, though, is that Brosnan wants to reprise his role as Doctor Fate, as he’s stated himself:

I enjoyed that, the philosophy of that character, very much, and I would definitely be open to it.

If a Doctor Fate movie were actually happening, it would take a lot for it to come together. Right now, the character doesn’t feel like a big enough draw to lead his own film. So, until James Gunn confirms anything, I’m hoping Doctor Fate appears in one of the upcoming DCU shows like Man of Tomorrow, Clayface, Swamp Thing, or Lanterns instead.

Pierce Brosnan has finished filming two new movies. First, he completed work on Cliffhanger, a remake of the classic Sylvester Stallone film, starring alongside Lily James. He’s also finished filming Giant, a biopic about the famous British boxer Prince Naseem Hamed, directed by Rowan Athale.
