Is Dragon Ball Age 1000’s Main Character Broly’s Grandson?

A new hero created by Akira Toriyama was unveiled at the recent Genkidamatsuri event. This character, currently without a name, will star in a new Dragon Ball video game called Project Age 1000, which takes place 200 years in the future—likely after Goku is gone. While the game’s concept sounds interesting, I was honestly disappointed with the design of Toriyama’s new character.

I initially found the new Saiyan character a bit underwhelming. He was so lean and his costume made him seem almost comically weak. However, a popular fan theory circulating online completely changed my opinion. The theory – which hasn’t been confirmed but is really compelling – suggests he’s the grandson of Broly and Cheelai. If true, it makes this new character from Age 1000 much more interesting.

Dragon Ball Age 1000’s New Protagonist Might Be Cheelai and Broly’s Descendent

The story delivers a big surprise when the main character transforms into a Super Saiyan near the end. This is unexpected because the hero, who appears frail with white hair, doesn’t initially seem to have the typical traits of a Saiyan. Usually, Saiyans are known for their strong, muscular bodies and dark hair.

I have to admit, seeing him with the popular fan theory in mind – the one that the hero of Age 1000 is related to Broly and Cheelai – suddenly makes everything click. It really explains a lot.

At first, the main character from Age 1000 doesn’t seem like a typical Saiyan, but he shares a striking resemblance to Cheelai. They both have short, white hair and a similar slender build, and the shape of his eyes is also very similar to hers. This visual connection is especially interesting because Cheelai’s love interest in Dragon Ball Super is also a Saiyan, just like the hero of Age 1000.

Xenoverse 2 Already Made Broly and Cheelai’s Relationship Semi-Canon

From the moment Cheelai and Broly met, it was obvious they had a connection that went beyond friendship. Cheelai clearly cares deeply for Broly, more than anyone else, and Broly is fiercely protective of her. Although Beerus has shown romantic interest in Cheelai, she doesn’t feel the same way, as her affections seem to belong solely to Broly.

The romantic connection between Broly and Cheelai has always been hinted at, but never directly stated in the anime or manga. However, the game Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 offers a downloadable mode where players can develop a close relationship between the two characters, as described on the official Dragon Ball website.

During their time patrolling Conton City in Xenoverse 2, Broly and Cheelai have many sweet and touching moments. Cheelai even wants to buy Broly a present, and Broly is simply happy whenever Cheelai smiles. These little interactions really strengthen their bond, even though the game doesn’t explicitly show them becoming a couple.

Dragon Ball Age 1000’s Hero is Much Better If He’s Really Broly’s Grandson

Considering the game Age 1000 is set about 200 years after Dragon Ball Super (where Majin Buu was defeated in Age 774), it’s improbable the main character is Broly’s direct son. However, he could easily be Broly and Cheelai’s grandson or great-grandson.

Saiyans can stay strong and fight well into their 80s. We don’t know how long Cheelai’s people typically live, but because of this, it’s entirely plausible that Broly could have a child with her even when he’s very old—around Age 800. That half-Saiyan child could then have a child of their own in the 900s, and that child could either be the hero prophesied to appear at Age 1000, or be the parent of that hero.

I didn’t like the new main character in Age 1000 at first, but thinking of him as a possible grandson or great-grandson of Broly and Cheelai has changed my mind. Since Broly is such a popular and powerful character in Dragon Ball, having that connection instantly makes the Age 1000 hero more interesting. It’s also cool to imagine Akira Toriyama weaving the game’s story so closely with the existing characters, even though it’s set so far in the future. I’m excited to see how the game might reveal more about the Z Fighters and their legacy in this distant future.
