Critics generally haven’t liked Markiplier’s movie, Iron Lung, but viewers seem to be enjoying it much more.
Mark Fischbach, known online as a popular YouTuber, was so impressed with the video game Iron Lung that he decided to make a movie based on it.
Markiplier independently produced the film, handling all the financing, writing, directing, and acting himself. He then released it through a direct-to-audience campaign that successfully brought it to theaters, where it’s already earned over $17 million.
The movie wasn’t shown to critics beforehand, so reviews only appeared after its release. This has led to a big difference between what critics and general audiences think of Iron Lung.
Iron Lung has 50% critic score and 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes calculates a ‘Tomatometer’ score by collecting reviews from critics, but it also lets regular moviegoers share their opinions, resulting in an ‘Audience Score’ displayed on the ‘Popcornmeter’.
Iron Lung has a big difference in its scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics gave it a 50% rating based on 12 reviews, while audiences gave it an 89% rating based on over 1,000 reviews.
Okay, so those scores you’re seeing right now are accurate as of today, but they could definitely change. As more reviews come out and more people actually go see the movie, things might shift. Still, after four days of being in theaters, it gives you a pretty good idea of how critics and regular moviegoers are feeling about it right now.
IGN gave Iron Lung a low score of 4 out of 10, criticizing the gameplay as largely consisting of watching the player character perform repetitive actions like turning knobs, looking at screens, and taking notes. They found it rarely captivating, even when the character interacted with voices over the radio.
Collider rated the film 6 out of 10, praising the director’s skill and noting that Fischbach proves he’s a capable filmmaker, successfully creating scares similar to those he evokes while gaming. This debut demonstrates he’s more than just a content creator.
IndieWire gave Iron Lung a C+ grade, noting that while it’s ambitious, it can also be surprisingly dull. However, they felt it was more spirited and inventive than many big-budget movies that play it safe.

This movie has a straightforward idea but keeps you guessing with unexpected turns. The story is told in a clever, understated way, making it really enjoyable to watch. Definitely recommend it – especially considering Markiplier created it with a small team and limited resources!
