Be warned, this contains major spoilers for the first three episodes of Invincible season 4 and the Invincible comic books! Season 4 of Invincible is significantly advancing the story towards revealing Mark’s full Viltrumite heritage, and a huge reveal is coming. The season is diving much deeper into the danger the Viltrum Empire presents to Earth, and introduces Grand Regent Thragg, the primary villain of the entire series.
The characters’ adventures in Invincible season 4 are building towards a major reveal that will fundamentally alter the series. This stems from Mark’s hidden connection to the Viltrum Empire, a relationship explored in greater detail in the later issues of the original comic book. The show is now setting the stage for this storyline through recent flashbacks.
Invincible Season 4’s Flashbacks Set Up A Shocking Reveal About Mark’s Bloodline
In Invincible season 4, episode 2, a flashback shows a young Nolan Grayson shortly before the Scourge Virus wiped out most Viltrumites. In this scene, Nolan is teaching children about Emperor Argall, the Viltrum Empire’s previous ruler, who is credited with building Viltrum into a galactic power. Argall was later killed by Thaedus.
Nolan believes the Argall family line disappeared, and a subsequent massive purge eliminated millions, which the Viltrumite Empire claims has actually strengthened their people. Season 4 of Invincible highlights this history in flashbacks, but the story is quickly overtaken by the devastating Scourge Virus, which nearly wiped out all Viltrumites and threatens the Empire’s survival.
As a comic book fan, I gotta say, those flashbacks weren’t just for show. They’re building towards a huge twist: Mark and Nolan are actually descendants of Argall, which makes them the legitimate heirs to the Viltrum Empire! It’s a game-changer, seriously. This discovery completely alters the direction of the Viltrumite saga in the comics, and it’s key to understanding Mark’s journey as he truly becomes a hero.
When Invincible Will Reveal The Truth, According To The Comics
As a huge fan of both the Invincible comics and the show, I think the comics really nailed the timing of when Mark and Nolan’s true Viltrumite heritage is revealed. The show has a bit more ground to cover before getting there, though. They’re building up to it with the whole Viltrumite War arc, and then they’ll need another arc to show us how that massive conflict actually changed things for Earth and the rest of the galaxy. It’s a lot to unpack, but I think it’s going to be worth the wait!
In issue #102 of Invincible, Thragg gains the advantage over Nolan in a surprise attack that nearly kills Debbie. Before he tries to finish Nolan off, Thragg reveals he knows Nolan’s secret past. This is when the comic explains that Nolan is actually the son of Argall, making him the rightful heir to the Viltrumite Empire.
With the release of Invincible season 4, episode 3, the show has begun adapting story elements from Invincible #71, which kicks off the eight-issue Viltrumite War storyline. The series hasn’t yet started exploring the original plotline involving Damien Darkblood. This suggests that the reveal of Mark’s true origins won’t happen until at least season 5 or 6, considering how much of the comic remains to be adapted.
What Mark Being Related To Emperor Argall Means For His Future
Currently, Mark doesn’t know about his father’s involvement with the group of planets fighting against Thragg and the Viltrumite Empire. While he will become involved in that war later on, he still won’t discover his family connection to the previous Viltrumite Emperor. Despite this, learning about the war sets the stage for everything that happens to him next.
The fact that Mark is related to Emperor Argall sets up a major turning point for his character: he’s now in line to become the next ruler of the Viltrumite Empire, which could eventually lead to the downfall of Thragg’s reign. The series will likely spend a significant amount of time exploring how Mark processes this information, and it will be crucial to understanding his growth and the challenges he faces in upcoming seasons.
As a big fan of Invincible, I’m really intrigued by the introduction of Emperor Argall in season 4, but I get the feeling we won’t see the full impact of his connection to Mark for a while. Right now, it looks like Mark and Nolan have their hands full with Thragg, which is fine by me – that’s a huge conflict on its own! Still, introducing Argall feels like the show is setting up some major future storylines and subtly giving us clues about how Mark and Nolan might eventually overcome everything.
