A deal to sell an internet company is facing problems – unbelievably, because rats have been chewing through the cables, scaring off a potential buyer.
Almost everyone has dealt with frustrating internet problems. Slow connections can happen for many reasons, like bad weather or accidental damage to cables during repairs.
G.Network, a London-based internet provider, has entered administration after accumulating £300 million in debt. A potential sale to rival company Community Fibre has been rejected.
I was reading The Telegraph, and it sounds like things aren’t going well for this internet company. Apparently, they only have under 25,000 customers, which means the people in charge have had to step in and look for someone else to take over. I thought Community Fibre was going to be that company, but it looks like that deal fell through!
Rats eat “very tasty” internet cables
According to the report, Community Fibre cancelled the agreement after rats damaged G.Network’s cables, which were made from biodegradable materials.
According to Community Fibre CEO Graeme Oxby, rodents are attracted to the ducting and fibre optic cables used in their network – they find the cables particularly appealing to chew on. However, he told The Telegraph that addressing this issue isn’t a priority because the underlying structural problems seem significant and would likely be costly to repair.
I just read on Tom’s Hardware that these new biodegradable cables are made from things like soy and corn, which is great for the environment… but apparently, it also makes them super attractive to rats! It’s a bit of a trade-off, honestly.

G.Network is still providing gigabit internet for £29 a month to customers in London, even after entering administration.
Look, I’ve seen some weird stuff cause internet outages, but rats chewing through cables? Honestly, it’s not even the strangest thing that’s happened to my connection. It’s just…another day in the life of a gamer, I guess.
In Dallas, Texas, a stray bullet caused around 25,000 Spectrum customers to lose internet service for about three hours last October. Technicians quickly repaired the damaged fiber optic cable, restoring connectivity.
