After a three-year silence, Strong Bad is back with a new email! True to form, it’s about robots—and this time, they’re debating their favorite sauces. His return feels like coming home to the wonderfully weird world of Free Country, USA, and reminds everyone why he and the Homestar Runner crew were so beloved. It’s also a great time to remember when these characters jumped from simple website cartoons to full video games.
The highlight of the Homestar Runner franchise was arguably Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People, a five-part adventure game released in 2008. Created with the Brothers Chaps – the creators of Homestar Runner – the game felt like playing an interactive cartoon, featuring their signature writing, art style, and voice acting. Players helped Strong Bad with his wacky plans – everything from entering band contests to trying (and failing) to take over the world – letting fans enjoy his over-the-top personality in a fresh way, while revisiting beloved locations like Strong Bad’s house and Bubs’ shop.
Much of what made the game so appealing was how closely it captured the spirit of the original Flash cartoons. Although it played like a typical Telltale adventure, the game world was full of strange and funny interactions, nonsensical conversations, and puzzles that didn’t rely on logic – instead, they followed the unique, quirky rules of Homestar Runner. Each episode included fun extras like weird arcade games, collectible cards featuring the Teen Girl Squad, and hidden secrets that longtime fans of the old website would love discovering.
That series’ popularity solidified Homestar Runner as a surprisingly versatile platform for games. Before partnering with Telltale, the franchise had already created fun interactive games like Peasant’s Quest, Stinkoman 20X6, and TROGDOR!, and later brought back TROGDOR! as both a board game and a digital experience. Even when Strong Bad wasn’t the main focus, his signature humor and unpredictable behavior were always present. Now, with his return to answering emails, he’s reminding everyone that Free Country, USA is just an inbox away.
