Intel has struggled financially lately, leading to layoffs and the cancellation of various projects. It appeared the company was in serious trouble, but competitors like NVIDIA stepped in with billions of dollars in investment to help. Despite a past where, according to NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang, Intel actively tried to hinder their success – he even told Jim Cramer, “Intel wanted to kill us” – Huang focused on supporting Intel’s recovery.
NVIDIA won the competition against Intel
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Intel was a dominant and highly successful company led by Andrew Grove, while NVIDIA was a relatively new player. Intel’s CEO reportedly didn’t take NVIDIA or its founder, Jensen Huang, seriously, and according to journalist Jim Cramer, actively disliked the competition. Huang himself stated that Intel’s goal was to eliminate NVIDIA.
I remember Intel well – I even knew Andy Grove, who served on the board. He once suggested they acquire a company very similar to yours, around the time you were talking with him. Andy could be blunt, but that was just his personality.
Jensen Huang explained that the issue wasn’t just the approach taken, but how Intel positioned itself over the years. He stated that Intel spent 33 years attempting to eliminate his company.
Intel allegedly attempted to gain an edge over rivals by making deals that unfairly restricted competitors, particularly concerning copyrights and licensing. NVIDIA faced a similar situation early on, initially creating chips for Intel under contract before pursuing its own independent projects. This led to a legal battle which NVIDIA ultimately won, costing Intel $1.5 billion in licensing fees, according to Wccftech.
Okay, so things are really shifting now. NVIDIA just invested a massive $5 billion in Intel, and it sounds like they’re betting big on a partnership. I heard Jensen Huang talking about how Intel is going to build a processor *for* NVIDIA, and they’re also working on a completely new chip aimed at a market we haven’t even seen yet. Pretty exciting stuff!
