Instagram testing paid subscription to let you anonymously watch Stories

Instagram is testing a new subscription service that allows users to view Stories without the poster knowing. Currently, this feature is only available to a very small number of people.

For a long time, people who use social media have worried that the sites they love would start costing a lot of money to use.

X, formerly known as Twitter, offers a paid Premium subscription. Facebook and Instagram also have paid verification options, but these are primarily aimed at businesses rather than typical users who use the platforms to connect with friends and family.

Instagram is now testing a subscription option for regular users, but it’s currently available in only a limited number of countries.

Instagram Plus being tested in multiple countries

According to TechCrunch, Instagram is testing a new feature in Canada, Japan, and the Philippines that lets users view Stories anonymously for a small fee.

The report indicates that viewers can now watch Stories privately, without the person who posted them being notified. Additionally, users can now see how many times their own Stories have been rewatched.

As a subscriber, I get a couple of really cool perks. First, I can make my stories last for 48 hours instead of just 24, which is awesome for people in different time zones or who are just busy. Plus, I can ‘spotlight’ one of my stories each week to help more people see it. But the best part? I can actually search for specific people who’ve viewed my story, instead of endlessly scrolling through a huge list. It makes it so much easier to see who’s engaging with my content!

Instagram is currently testing a new subscription service called Instagram Plus in Mexico. For around $39 pesos a month, subscribers would get extra features like the ability to create multiple story groups, extend how long stories stay visible, search through who viewed their stories, and send special ‘super hearts’.

It’s unclear how popular it will be, but it will likely raise security and privacy worries for some people.

I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter online about Instagram’s new feature, and honestly, people are pretty worried. One person pointed out that the fact you have to pay to view Stories anonymously really highlights how people are actually using the app – and it’s not always for good reasons. Another user even said it feels like Instagram is trying to profit off of, well, stalking. It’s a little unsettling, to be honest.

I’ve been following the news, and it looks like this new thing is being tested in a few places! TechCrunch pointed out that while it might be happening in more countries, these three are the only ones we’ve heard about for sure being in the testing phase right now.

Presumably, the subscription would roll out worldwide if the testing phase is a success.

Both X Premium and Snapchat Plus have become popular subscription services. X Premium allows users to earn money directly from their posts.
